She is basically clueless since the Spartans have 7 verbal committments and all of them were done by late June. 
So the article is either way late in being published which is inexcusable
(basically useless in terms of timeliness in getting this out since recruits can commit on any day) or she is showing her UM bias since she mistates the number

Aside from the "five" either being a mistake or as Mr. NCAA stated ... an article that was published well after the fact ... .. I didn't find the
Q&A with Lemming biased in either direction ...
Even though the sportswriter in question is more known to report about events with U of M football .. I didn't see anything to complain about for Spartan fans with this one (aside from misinformation).... I'm thinking since Lemming didn't correct her the interview probably took place before the most recent Spartan commitments. |

The Spartans 6th committment came on June 25th. So do the math and the article is 12 days old or she showed her UM bias. I think that is the later since a
sports editor should have approved the article in question as well. The Detroit News sports editor should be fired for being incompetant as well for either
being late in timeliness or not checking the article for accuracy on the date it is being published. This isn't a subjective poll where biases are
allowed.
For Searn there is a huge difference between the 5 and the 7. With the 5, the Wolverines had 3 times more verbals than the Spartans while with the 7 it is slightly more than twice as many.

This writer used to cover U of M and do auto racing coverage exclusively some years back - not sure if that is still the case. She may even be a U of M
grad. Either way, I didn't read bias into the Q&A article. If anything, the premise of the article seems to be that MSU has taken hold of recruiting
in-state (hard to argue against that). I think she was exploring whether that is seen as the case by outsiders (Lemming, for example) and whether it will
become a factor in the schools' near-term football fortunes (too early to tell, in my opinion).

Since Searn doesn't see the bias, I'll explain one bias. The article in question was updated after 7pm tonight. No change on the number of 2010
Spartan verbal committents though. So no big thing to the editor or the woman sportswriter to update a wrong number in the article in question.

To prepseer, wasn't I factually correct in that it was a woman sportsreporter that gave out bogus info or it was published way late? Besides everyone
knows that I'm politically incorrect. Where were the NOW people speaking out against the slams/jokes on Palin so they must be sexist as well (not that I
really support her since she had a major socialist position on the oil taxes to give back to the people IMHO)?
 Personally on my computer there was another update at 10:22 pm, but no
correction on that aspect of the article. During one 12 day stretch the Spartans picked 4 verbal committments, not that this is high compared to some other
schools. That's why making comments about the number of recruits has to be done in a timely manner or else you make yourself out to be a fool when
published that late. The least Angel Eyes could have done is said when the interview took place if it was that old (> or = 12 days old sorry but my
computer doesn't have to right sign so I did them separately).

While the number of MSU commitments might have been understated, I think the main thrust of the article remains the same. MSU has been more successful
recruiting in state. UM has been more successful recruiting nationally, particularly in Ohio, Florida and Texas. Since everyone agrees that high school
football is better in Ohio, Florida and Texans, among others, than Michigan, I would rather be more successful in those states than in Michigan. Of course, it
would be nice to get the top local talent, but they are not always the best players available. Unless MSU improves its national recruiting, they will always
be a second tier program.
I think the article was fine. I have no feelings one way or the other about Angelique. She's just a typical beat reporter as far as I'm concerned. Football recruiting is a moving target. I don't think internet blogs can keep up let alone print media. |

If you are writing about someone else, call or e-mail them for a comment before you publish. The above came from one of my journalism ethics links. So obviously she didn't do that. She didn't check her facts before hand (which is another journalism rule) from known websites as well to confirm her numbers. So in other words she didn't prepare herself fully for the interview. This would be like me saying that UM had 13 committments and the Spartans had 9 if I was the Spartan reporter (off by 2 for both schools). I'm sure that if I wrote for the Freep or News there would be a big uproar if I did that. Maybe it doesn't bother you, but for the Spartan fans like me it is a big thing to be off by that much. |

I guess for me when it comes to college recruiting stuff I just don't get fired up too much by VERBALS anymore. Especially verbals NOW when there is still a ton of time for a kid to change his mind for whatever reason. Not to mention like what was already mentioned in this thread recruiting is a moving target and can change daily if not hourly. Add to that I don't put much stock in the rivals or scout star rating b.s. totally so I guess I just don't see much to get fired up about.
