Obviously there are definitions out there that indicate that, however, according to the majority of the definitions, the best, and most accepted way that the word is used is in the plural sense. And in this case [football, and our examples], there is a much better word/ phrase to use, and that is: the best.

So the bottom line is that it makes more sense [in this case], that elite is used in the plural form because there is a better term to use in the singular form.

Well you will just have to live with the fact that MERRIAM-WEBSTER says the word can be constructed singularly or plural. You will have to excuse me if I am going to go with them over over you. They are in fact a DICTIONARY and therefore more credible than any of us on the subject, so I am more than willing to defer to them.

NO, in your Rockford example Rockford is THE only Elite team and therefore it is best used singular and I am more than fine with the word elite being used in that instance because more than one source has told me that I can use it singularly. As far as Fordson in the 80's goes they were a good team but NOT one of the states elite. Part of my criteria is state titles and Fordson has none in the 80's.
