MHSAA mileage rule |
Lead | ||
|
Just for HSSportsGuru there has been a MHSAA mileage rule before 1961 when Muskegon CC violated the then in effect rule by going over water to play the South
Dakota team. Muskegon CC and every other MHSAA school was told at that time not to count the mileage going over water anymore, but actual road mileages. This
made the newspapers back then. So where you get off saying that the MHSAA hasn't had a mileage rule is just so incorrect since it has been around for a
very long time.

Is that why Menominee played a Minnesota school in Wisconsin after being placed on probation since schools can't meet in between?
http://searnfootballforum.yuku.com/reply/9972#reply-9972 I see on the MHSAA schedule where Menominee changed their game with Plymouth Robbinsdale to Rice Lake Wisconsin. We've covered this topic enough on here. Do a site search and several links should come up for you. |

Menominee didn't change the game to Rice Lake by their own accord, they were basically forced to do so in order to not lose the game completely.
Robbinsdale had threatened to not play Menominee at all if they had to play in Menominee (which is what the contract had been planned for). Robbinsdale claimed
that is just couldn't afford to drive all the way to Menominee. Therefore, Menominee agreed to play in Rice Lake, which was as far as Robbinsdale had
agreed to travel to play the game. Robbinsdale basically held Menominee "hostage" for that. Menominee had exausted all other attempts to find
opponents in Wisconsin and Michigan to play that year.
The same thing happened to Menominee with Madison West a few years ago. The contract had been signed that West was to play at Menominee. Then, when the Madison publich schools told West officials that they could not afford to send West all the way to Menominee, that the game would have to be canceled. There again, the Maroons bent over backwards, and agreed to play the game in Madison, in order to save a 9 game schedule that year. Menominee has been stung by this many times. Too bad these schools are not forced to pay $$ when they pull this kind of B.S. Escanaba got the same kind of shaft in 2008 when Remus-Chippewa Hills refused to honor it's contract with the Eskymos. Esky played at Remus in 2007. Then Chip Hills turns around and blatantly tells Esky that they were not going to play at Escanaba in 2008 (even after a legal signed contract). Later, Esky got MHSAA involved but Chip Hills basically got a slap on the wrist. |

Mileage Rule | #3 | ||
|
There are a lot of flaws to this rule. The two that I think need to be adressed by the MHSAA are:
1. It is ok to play any team in Michigan regardless of the mileage. For example, a team from the Detroit area can play Menominee (475 miles one way), but can't play a team in Rockford, IL (375 miles one way). There are a lot of good game possibilities in non-bordering states that are less distant than Menominee. The MHSAA should allow any game that is within the maximum mileage of an intra-state game, which I guess would be from Monroe or Niles to Menominee. 2. The location of the game should be the determining factor, not where the opponent's school is located. For example, if a Michigan team wanted to play a Florida team in Cincinnati (within the 300 mile limit) that game should be allowed. The absolute worst interpretation of the mileage rule by the MHSAA that I can recall is the ruling against Brother Rice playing Cincinnati LaSalle in the Herbstreit Challenge a couple years ago. The game was within the 300 mile limit. The opponent was within the 300 mile limit. But, because the "event" had teams from outside the 300 mile limit playing in other games that weekend, the Rice-LaSalle game could not take place. That is an expample of a poor interpretation of a reasonable rule. |

The current mileage rule is the rule. Know it. Schedule according to what it says. Get creative and play a new state on my list. Work for its repeal and
develop a new one if you want, but obey the current rule in place. All I know is that the MHSAA was shocked by how many states that we could play when I
formed my list a few years ago. They never thought that we could play so many states with such a restrictive rule in place.
Just for everyone here, Blissfield played a couple of Kentucky teams in baseball during the Easter break and won both. One was on Kentucky's HM list.

About Esky-Chip Hills, the conference CH was in added a few teams in 2008, making week 8 a conference game (bye week was week 2).

I found out that Kingsford has scheduled a Minnesota team in 2009. Good for them.

Kingsford is playing a Saturday game at Duluth (MN) East. The trip for Kingsford is less than 250 miles, making it far less for Kingsford to go to Duluth MN,
than the trip they made to Traverse City last year.
And, it is well within the 300 mile rule Kingsford is also playing at Sault Ste. Marie Sir James Dunn in week 3. THis is not the best kind of opponent for Kingsford, but it should be an easy win over a school that would rank in Class B if they were in Michigan. Many, many Wisconsin schools have found out just how tough Kingsford, Menominee, Gladstone and Escanaba are on the football field. Many Wisconsin schools now refuse to play any of these 4 schools. Even the Milwaukee schools have finally given up the ship. Too bad for Menominee, which still has a open date for week 2 for 2009. |

Finally allowed to post!!!
Perhaps the UP teams need to get creative, play in Wisconsin, and play teams from North Dakota, South Dakota, and Illinois. If the UP teams off the same open date, then they could get together with Iowa schools at the same venue (Iowa rule has to be multi venue event for teams to play out of state). |

You didn't see me complaining that Duluth wasn't in the proper mileage wise for Kingsford since I knew that was a legal area to play in.
