Former Pioneer High School quarterback Nader Furrha will enroll this week as a recruited walk-on at the University of Michigan after turning down football scholarship offers from Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State.

There were also some Mid-American Conference schools after the 6-foot-1-inch, 180-pound dual-threat quarterback, but the chance to go to Michigan was one that Furrha thought he could not pass up.
"It was a tough decision, but I just felt comfortable with the coaches,'' Furrha said. "I think I can go in there, work hard and earn a spot.
"The coaches told me I'd get the same shots as everyone else. I'll be treated the same as everyone else.''
For the second straight year, Furrha was the first-team quarterback on The Ann Arbor News' All-area team after compiling 1,168 yards and 14 touchdowns rushing and throwing for 1,100 yards and seven touchdowns. He was also honorable mention All-State as the Pioneers went 7-3 and made the state playoffs.
Wherever he was going to go, Furrha had already worked it out to enroll in January by completing his high school studies early. An aspiring doctor, Furrha's first day of classes is Wednesday.
And he'll be able to join the Wolverines for spring practice and show the skills that made him excel at the high school level.
"Michigan runs a spread offense and I'm a spread quarterback,'' Furrha said. "My speed is an advantage, and I think my arm is good. I think I can compete with anyone.''
