If U of D ever decided they wanted football to be an important part of the culture of that school look out. The question is new AD there, now a new coach
coming in, will U of D continue to push to be a second tier team in regards to scheduling, or will they jump into playing all of the central teams and work to
fight for a central division title. This is a big hire for U of D

Unfortunately, Uof d had a good football coach in Scott Merchant who was guiding the program in the right direction. He resurrected that program when it was
left for dead approximately 12-13 yrs ago. He had them competitive in the CHSL for a number of years with lesser talent than alot of other teams in the
conference.

One clearly has something to do with the other regardless of the resignation reports. So, I'll bet the new AD has visions of a program better, bigger, and more competetive than the previous coach was able to deliver, or that the previous AD had envisioned. It seems the new AD cares. That's a big deal at UDJ. They should care. Problem now is filling the job with a clearly better coach. If they don't upgrade the position, it could be a sign that no one good really wants the job. |

Head Coaching hire | #4 | ||

The problem is that U of D admin. historically does not support the program. When they hired Paul Windham they had a hiring committee that also included the
likes of Ron Rice and other well known alumni of the school. The A.D. at the school has very little power in the hiring process. That position is strictly an
organizing position. The hiring committee hired a guy who had very little Head Coaching experience, a coordinator at a school that was average at best. The
reason he was hired because he was an......... you guessed it..... he was an alum! This guy was hired an couldn 't even put a staff together. Real nice
hiring committee! They didn't even hire the best guy for the job, Jason Whalen, who was the O-Coordinator was the guy for the job and they snubbed him!
They better get it figured out that to get a solid coach to come to that school, they need to support him. I feel sorry for those athletes at that school who
are tremendous individual players, but their school doesn 't support their sport and get them a real coach.

Ok who here seriously thinks that anybody can walk into this job and consistently do any better than Merchant did? Not rattle off a good season here or there,
but play week in week out in the Central and be competitive darn near every week?

Back around 2001 I honesty believed he had it going as to where they would be on par with or even pass a team like OLSM. .... U of D had the talent and the coaching to potentially become a powerhouse program ..... After that Mark Zera incident and what seemed to be constant questions around players like Lonnie Hurst who had all the talent but not so much of the heart .. it just never happened like I was anticipating. With support from the administration ... there's no reason the only large Catholic high school in the city of Detroit can't have an excellent football program. |

UD Jesuit | #8 | ||
|
The first step is to get a quality coach and there appears to be some good ones who are available (Putnam, Gabel, Kisabeth). But, the biggest problem UDJ will
face is to find quality athletes from Detroit who can handle the academics and then to have enough financial aid to enable those athletes to come to UD.
The suburban kids from GP and Bloomfield Hills who pay their way don't tend to be the football players. UD needs to tap into the deep Detroit market for talented athletes. Not many of those can or want to handle the tough academics at UD and the school will not bend its standards, like some other schools do. The biggest competition for the Cubs: OLSM, Cass Tech and Renaissance--and lately, Inkster and Oak Park. There's no cost to attend any of these schools for the talented athletes from Detroit, so not only does UDJ need to appeal to the athletes, but they need to come up with virtually full tuition assistance. I think UDJ can make the comeback, but it's not going to happen overnight. I wish them luck. It will make for a stronger Central Division if UD can come back. As for Divine Child, I feel they will eventually move to a restructured Intersectional Division with ND Prep, Bishop Foley, Flint Powers and maybe Monroe St. Mary's CC or Saginaw Nouvel CC. |

The Truth is that Jason Whalen didnt want to coach, The AD is only here because the old one was a shrine alum. and he is now the Assistant Principal
there...the coach was not good and showed certain players who kissed his butt favortism...i know this much because i go to the school and Mr. WHalen is my
college councilor the old ad was my CYO basketball coach who coached the Academy team...
BTW U of D's Frehman class is the most athletic class there Football - 6-3 Basketball is going to go almost undefeated...not much competition and on both teams their are 2 freshman players on Varsity Football Frosh on Varsity - Brian Cleary QB and Xavier Stallworth OL/DL and they both start Basketball Frosh on Varsity - Cameron Fowler 1/2 Chris Jenkins 2/3/4/possibly 5 in future...and the both get really good amounts of pt

Jason Whalen was not asked to take over as the head coach of the program when Scott Merchant left. I think everyone knows that was a mistake. Things did
happen later when it was apparent things were not working out... But too late then...
Most have faith new AD will make a good coaching choice. But of course issues mentioned above remain... |
