but here is a start - Hometown Life, Livonia Edition
Case for the defense Stevenson stymies West Bloomfield in district playoff game, 17-6While averaging almost 38 points a game in the regular season, Livonia Stevenson showed it has a pretty good defense, too, in the first round of the playoffs Friday.
Until the final 16 seconds, the Spartans pitched a shutout and finished with a 17-6 victory over visiting West Bloomfield in a Division 1 district tournament game. "Defensively, the kids did a great job preparing this week," Stevenson coach Tim Gabel said. "The defense had a great week of practice and came out and played like that. They bailed us out a number of times." The Spartans (8-2) intercepted West Bloomfield quarterback Ryan Christensen four times, and senior defensive back Mark Grisa made three of the picks. Stevenson held the Lakers to 85 rushing yards and 11 firsts down. The Spartans outgained the Lakers, 287-219, and were in control of the ball and situation for most of the game. "We didn't score a lot and we turned it over in the red zone," Gabel said. "It's tough to get in a rhythm when you know it's going to be a defensive struggle, and that's what it was tonight. "It's good to know we can rely on the defense. That's the best defensive effort we've had this year, and all the offensive guys were on the sideline pulling for them. It was good to see them come out and carry us tonight." Stevenson scored off the opening kickoff, marching 65 yards in nine plays. Wade Stahl scored on a 24-yard counter and Jonny Myshock booted the PAT at 7:33 of the first quarter. After their third possession ended with an end-zone interception by West Bloomfield's Justin Parker, the Spartans took a 10-0 lead with 1:04 remaining in the half when Myshock kicked a 27-yard field goal. Stevenson's Zeb Bacigal intercepted a pass on the first play of the third quarter, and the teams settled into a defensive struggle. The Spartans capitalized on a blocked punt by Jordan El-Sabeh at midfield to take a 17-0 lead at 8:22 in the fourth quarter. Austin White, who rushed for 88 yards on 25 carries, capped the 57-yard drive with a 2-yard run. His 27-yarder five plays earlier helped set up the score. "That running back; he's legitimate," West Bloomfield coach James Thomas said of White. "We felt, if we held him under a hundred yards, we would win the game. "The quarterback (Jacob Gudeman) was throwing 8- to 10-yard out routes and getting the first down, and that hurt us. They kept the ball away from us, which was very smart." Sophomore Phil Brown engineered a scoring drive on West Bloomfield's final possession, throwing an 8-yard touchdown pass to Chris Hurst with 16 seconds remaining. Hurst finished with five receptions for 44 yards; Cameron Fields made three catches for 70 yards. Christensen was 4-of-19 for 79 yards, Brown 7-of-11 for 55. "Our kids were pretty tight, nervous; that might have hurt us early," Thomas said. "The defense settled down in the third quarter and started to control the game. Offensively, we never got in a rhythm. They just outplayed us. "That's a credit to their defense. They pretty much shut us out. They made good plays on the long ball, which is what we had been living by all year. We wanted to shorten the passing downs and do a little more running, but it didn't work out. "That's a good (Stevenson) team. It was pretty simple; they played a basic football game, and they were ready for us. Their defense had a good game plan against our offense." The Spartans will be at home again Friday when they renew a long-standing playoff rivalry with Novi-Detroit Catholic Central in a district championship game. Stevenson rushed for 227 yards with Duran Onwuemene (57) and Stahl (49) making key contributions, too. Gudeman completed seven of 11 passes for 60 yards; Stephen Pollard and Stahl made three catches each. "We've scored a lot of points this year and have a lot of confidence (in the offense)," Gabel said. "(The Lakers) were quick and aggressive up front, and they were tough to block. We wanted to make first downs and shorten the clock. "The third score was a big one, because we got field position and took advantage of it. Our goal was to score enough points to win the game and not impress people." |

The senior caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Justin Svatora, rushed for a 22-yard touchdown and returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown to cap the host Highlanders' 35-21 victory over Livonia Stevenson, last season's Division 1 runner-up. Besides the three touchdowns, Wijtes kicked five extra points. Howell (2-0) played a near-flawless game. The Highlanders had no turnovers and committed just four penalties. Stevenson (1-1), meanwhile, committed 11 penalties for 110 yards, and threw four interceptions. Bryce Lindberg scored Howell's first touchdown on a 13-yard run in the first quarter, but left shortly thereafter because of a separated shoulder. The Spartans took a 14-7 lead when Wijtes caught his touchdown pass from Svatora to tie the score. Wijtes added his rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter to give Howell a 21-14 lead. The Spartans tied the score at 21, but an 86-yard kickoff return by Nate Riffle gave Howell the lead for good. Wijtes added the interception return for the final margin. Wijtes finished with 90 rushing yards, 37 receiving yards and completed a 33-yard pass. CC had a bad habit this season that they had no answers for. Getting themselves in either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd and "long" ... whether it be for a penalty
or a big loss on a sack.
To me if CC had a 1st, 2nd or 3rd and more than 10. ... you can kiss any sort of drive goodbye ... they might as well punt right now. Even if CC had more passing plays and formations, they commonly melted down if they needed bigger gains. |

CC was in that game against Stevenson, despite their best efforts not to be. I wonder about the play selection on the 2nd (?) drive of the 2nd half when they
had 3rd and goal from the 5 and tried to pass it in twice, and turned the ball over on downs.
A number of drops by the WRs, and plain misses by the QB. Having said that, I think their WRs, RBs, and QB are the least of their worries next year. What really REALLY surprised me was that the CC line was not dominant at virtually any point this season...at least against higher profile teams and the playoffs. I am not sure I have ever seen that in 10 years of watching CC FB. Stevenson deserved the win. They were the better team. And I think they would win again too. 23 is quite a player for LSHS. I think he might be a yapper too. I am guessing that PF was called on him in the 2nd half, for jawing too much. The result must be a huge relief for Stevenson....to get the CC monkey off of their back |

one has to wonder on how many potential shamrocks are now playing for the Spartans because of the move to novi. I can name at least three.... CC looked like
they were grabbing at straws all game offensively, they were throwing the ball way too much, when they went to their power sets they had some success. there
cover 2 4-3 defense was easily exploited by the spartans, who had they not gone into a playcalling shell in the 2nd half may have put the running clock on the
Shamrocks. #7 stahl. (sp?) had a field day against the shamrocks. If the kids don't believe in the offensive and defensive philosophies that won 8 state
championships in the last 20 years, then.. I think they have the wrong type of players, If the coaches are abandoning the philosophies that won 8 state
championships in the last 20 years then there may be some other pressures on them or maybe the loss of coratti has hurt them, I don't know. I guess maybe
parents have more of a say of what goes on in a school when there paying 10,000 a year, and from what i hear, it sounds like CC is losing more and more kids
from the blue collar areas as parents would rather just save up to foot the bill for there kids college. I remember when I saw CC lose at Jackson worthington
stadium in 2004 ending there season, on that field i thought i saw an empire crumble... .to this day I would say that the old CC football is gone. However, the
KLAA looks stronger then ever with 4 teams in the quarterfinals, Will make the admissions director of the NEW NOVI CC harder and harder to get the type of
athletes there looking for.

Great points Pav. All you have to do is look back to all the posts from the pre-season, regarding CC. Myself and others called this season to a tee. A young
team that would struggle in the league, improve from week to week, get that signature league win to make the playoffs and make a little noise once there - all
pointing to the concensus that they were a year away. This season does absolutely nothing indicate a "CC slide", but actually points to a very good
outlook for the coming years. People need to look at the big picture. How many years did it take CC to win a State Championship (or make the playoffs for that
matter) since the 79' season. 6 years for playoffs (85 - 87 - 88) and 11 years for a championship (90). Since the last State Championship (2003), they have
been in the playoffs 3 times in 5 years (05 - 07 - 08). I'm still waiting for where the "slide" comes in.
Lastly, the same defensive scheme that took them to the Semi's last year is the same one they used this year. |

So what are the expectations for the program? are they not state titles??????? Is CC becoming a juice box and orange slice program too? Pretty sure back in the
late 90's early 2000's it was state title or bust... Kids went there for the opportunity to win a state title, how do you tell the kid or the parents
who are paying 10k a year that this is a "building year"? Good luck getting blue collar kids which were a staple of your program, in these economic
times, when their public schools are having fine football teams and the academics are strong if not as strong as CC's.
Back in the 1980's a lot less teams make the playoffs.. and if this were the case the this year's team would have been at home too... Now since I have personally benefited from the current playoff format, Il let the arguement of 3 playoff years in 5 slide.. I have to say its the reason why we are having a golden age of Michigan HS football. Three how do they beat Stevenson, Novi, or some of these teams next year? Its not like Stevenson graduates everyone and Austin white still comes back.... Just because CC's players come back doesn't mean there better then what everyone else has in the cupboard... Fourth Are they a top 5 top ten program in the state? With the new playoff format no reason to not have a week 2 game while Rice and OLSM are playing Muskegon and EGR.. Seems like they were ducking people this year, Find me a top 5 or top 10 game next season so we can really assess, and no i don't mean inconference.. BTW just looked at mhsaa games wanted looks like Muskegon is open for a two year contract week 2.. .give em a call CC, because its obvious the CHSL was OVERRATED. (also fordson is available too) Believe me guys Im on your side, I was just disappointed in the game on Friday. I hope your right about future years, but I just don't see it... Maybe they need to send someone back to 142000 breakfast drive and get some of the practice field magic or something...... |

Thought provoking stuff tommie. Obvi you have some CC FB in your heart.
LSHS was the better team Friday, and they did go into an offensive shell. But your running clock scenario seems quite far fetched. As far as the passing game is concerned I look at it this way - CC was darn close to making any number of those numerous plays. I think that bodes well for the future. My concern for the team is how they reload their lines. That is wear they came up short. They need to be able to impose their will on teams, in addition to having the finesse players. They also need to come up with some deluxe hitters to instill an intimidation factor. They may have that in Palezeti (sp) but need a few more. And Kay, that same defensive scheme was missing a key ingredient from last year. (Gets PT for Michigan now) I know you knew that, but I was merely pointing out that perhaps the scheme needed to be evaluated based upon personnel. Do you agree with my assertion regarding CC line play this year? |

tommiegun80 wrote:Yes. Same goals. But to suggest the program is somehow in the proverbial tank because they haven't kept up the "6 titles in 9 years" pace, is just silly. Otherwise, alot of programs are on worse downslides than CC. tommiegun80 wrote:Kids went and still go there for a quality education first. And the parents that pay 10k need to first get told "here's your change; $1,000.00." tommiegun80 wrote:As always, this is subjective. If you want a pure headstart on college prep with a faith based foundation, CC is top notch. BG can give you the lowdown on National Merit accolades and college bound CC graduate rates. If you want other options like shop class and a broad array of less academic electives and trade skill development, perhaps CC isn't for you. No surprises here. CC isn't everyone's choice. tommiegun80 wrote:So, every team has returning players? Not just CC? Wow. Didn't know that. Thanks Professor. I guess no team ever gets any better or any worse from year to year then. The pecking order is set. Some players return on every team, so everyone is pretty much "what they are" already for next year. Silly. Have Stevenson and Novi been as successful as CC the past few years? I'd say comparable. Within a game or two. But considering how comparable the programs are, you seem ready to annoint Stevenson and Novi as the new dominant Division 1 powers in SE Michigan, while essentailly believing CC is dead. I don't get that double standard. tommiegun80 wrote:Most CC fans and Alums I know agree they want a full schedule (unlike this year's) and when a game is needed, we've seen enough of London CC or Windsor Sandwich. Or whatever. But "ducking people"? Really? Hard to put that label on them without knowing the inner workings of how the schedule came to be what it is, and what kinds of deals were potentially being worked. Disappointing? Yes, of course. I would love to see a CC/Musky home/home for a couple years. Would be great fun. Any team that aspires to Statewide presence should do something like that. Do you suggest Novi and Stevenson shore up their non-conference schedules too? Or is this another double standard? CHSL overrated? By whom? The ratings I saw had them about where they finished playoff wise, with DLS still playing. Who had who exactly overrated? Not as strong as previous years? Sure. Overrated? I don't see that. They were by and large rated "meh", and that's what they turned out to be. Meh. Except DeLaSalle. tommiegun80 wrote:Believe you? I'd like to Tommie. But you seem to have your mind made up. Seems the CC program, unable to continue a 6/9 State Title pace, is in the tank and perhaps should consider just folding. Donate the helmets to whom? Nah. I'll give them one more year. We'll see if they put a competetive product on the field. Don't celebrate the demise of CC football just yet. These Sophs and Juniors are a pretty good group. Unlike you, I believe they'll get better next year. We'll see.

I don't think any of you can attribute that to the random nature of who attends the school. It's just way too coincidental (and almost statistically impossible) that the type of team changed at the exact same time as the move from Redford to Novi. It seems to me that the administration had to choose between a healthy bottom line and a healthy dose of state titles in football, and they wisely chose the former. ![]() |

CC returns a good group. Below is a list of the returning juniors who recieved some recognition. They return something like 9 of 11 players
on each side of the ball. It will be hardest for them to fill the void left by Nick Landry, and Khalid Mheisen, but they should be able to. These guys get
better every year, and I believe CC has a better off-season training program than most other schools. We will see.

Good to hear diesel we will see if they get it done. Id like to see them back in the thick of things. I think it starts with playing a harder non-conference
schedule (looks like Southeastern was a strong choice) With tuition.. Pavlov, by the time you factor in buying books, technology fee, and football fee's
among others im sure the total gets closer to 10k.
Maybe someone else could clarify, but I believe they do have a shuttle bus service from places like Livonia? Do they still do that, last I heard you had to pay for it, We'll see what happens. |
