Senior Posts: 17 10/05/08 8:01 PM Playoff Maps and Brackets	Tags : None Taking data from AuldSchool, here are maps for all 8 divisions. I noticed there were 255 teams at 4-2 or better, and just had to pick one more team (DCC)... so I jumped the gun and got to work before AuldSchool posted the teams. http://www.snooze2you.com/2008/index2008.htm Some divisions were a little tricky this week. Looking for your input MrNcaa. Enjoy! Changes since first posting: D2: Swapped Lowell and Caledonia with BC Lakeview and Adrian. D6: Swapped Kalamazoo Chr. and Gobles. D5: Swapped Saginaw Swan Valley and Ovid-Elsie with Standish-Sterling and Essexville Garber. Big ripple effect from Sterling Hts Parkway Chr. forfeiting their five wins! See post on other thread. D3 - Added Det. Old Redford (the only remaining 3-2 team). D4 - Moved Dearborn Div. Child from D3. D5 - Moved Coloma from D4. D6 - Moved Calumet from D5. D7 - Moved Gobles from D6. D8 - Moved Saugatuck from D7. Removed Sterling Hts. Parkway Chr. Changes since first (post-forfeit) posting: Changed POP values (as calculated by AuldSchool) for teams affected by the forfeit. Sophomore Posts: 8 10/05/08 8:07 PM	I'm probably missing something but I was wondering if you could explain to me how you would know which group is would make up regional matches and then which regions meet in semifinals?

FRR2, It's only a guess. I've been interested in the way teams get grouped for quite a while. Once I figured out a way to generate the push-pin maps, it became a hobby to predict the way MHSAA would group them. All-Searn Hall of Fame Posts: 5910 10/05/08 8:12 PM MHSAA Football Stats	I might look at the maps, edit this, and make suggestions later in the week. D8 - looks real nice D7 - looks real nice D6 - I would switch Gobles and Kalamazoo Christian since Gobles is further north D5 - I would want to run some mileage numbers for the Bay City/Thumb area = looks nice but want to see if it makes sense to switch some teams around D4 - looks real nice D3 - I forget when the MHSAA mileage reimbursement kicks in - anyways Hazel Park and Dearborn Divine Child would probably be switched by the MHSAA since Hazel Park is further north to Lapeer D2 - I would put Lowell and Caledonia with the Portage schools to cut some mileage down D1 - looks real nice So that's the only switches that I come up this week. All-Searn 1st Team Posts: 1800 10/05/08 8:28 PM Forum Donor	Yeah, those maps are great. They also put the W Side vs E Side debate into graphical perspective....there are so many more schools representing the smaller divisions on the W side. And even though these are PO schools only they represent about 40% of ttl schools, more than enough to be statistically relevant.

AuldSchool, How do you know for sure when MHSAA is complete? Do you just keep checking for results you know to be missing? Or do you have an automated way? Just curious. Now that I think of it, some of my POP values are probably incorrect since I downloaded MHSAA data last night. Do you have a ballpark idea of how many of the 256 had POP values change in the last 24 hours or so?

Any particular meaning to the colors? dsmith, First of all, I just changed D2, so you might take another look. I changed districts 2 and 3 as suggested by MrNcaa. To answer your question, each color represents a playoff district. District colors are: District 1 = Red District 2 = Yellow District 3 = Blue District 4 = Orange District 5 = Purple District 6 = White District 7 = Green District 8 = Brown On the right side, the teams are listed by district, then by POP average. So, for each district, team 4 plays at team 1, and team 3 plays at team 2. For regionals, district 1 plays district 2, and so on.

Spot check the averages. Looked at week six schedule for missing results. Usually I have to do one remake of the list, but the MHSAA is getting better as the year(s) go on. If anyone spots anything let me know.

In case you haven't noticed, I'm logging changes in my first post at the top. I haven't made your D3 change (yet), because I'm not 100% convinced. This brings to mind a question that I've had before. Does the MHSAA consider AT ALL which teams would be playing each other when determining the districts? In this example, Divine Child would be at Ferndale, so I would be inclined to keep them in the "green" district. If Divine Child had to travel to Lapeer, I'd consider switching them. I know that officially the MHSAA doesn't consider things like balancing power in districts or creating "intriguing" match-ups. But I would think that looking at pairings for the sake of travel minimization would be okay.

Thanks for your feedback dsmith, Usually I mention that each color represents a district, but obviously, not this week. At the very least, I'll make it more clear next week. I'm considering quite a few improvements. Here are a few: Pan and zoom the map automatically based on the teams (to keep UP teams from being hidden); Allow the user to re-size the map; List schools in bracket form on the right side; Allow users to start with "blank" push pins, and have them decide the color (i.e. district) for each team... Okay, some of these will just have to wait until next year.

All-Searn Hall of Fame Posts: 5914 10/06/08 9:51 AM MHSAA Football Stats	Does the MHSAA consider AT ALL which teams would be playing each other when determining the districts? The MHSAA usually but not always follows their north, southwest, west, central, thumb, southeast rules. They are suppose to take into consideration the mileages between the schools since that will reduce the costs for them. The MHSAA isn't suppose to take a look at the won loss plus the CPA number during the drawing of the maps from my understanding. I see which changes you made and which ones you didn't.

Junior Posts: 16 10/06/08 10:21 AM	I ran the Division 8 map past a friend of mine that works at MHSAA, and he said "My map [of Division 8] didn't put Muskegon Catholic into the same district with Marion, Manistee CC and Frankfort; nor did I have All Saints or Seminary in the same district with SHA and Beal City." I didn't press him for more details since they don't really like to make predictions anyway.

Junior Posts: 18 10/06/08 10:53 AM	As for whether the MHSAA considers the "who" and not just the "where" of Districts, my two cents is that a few years ago, I remember an undefeated Muskegon CC ended up in the same District as an undefeated Merrill team (towns that are not that close together!) and then followed that up with a game in the Regional against an undefeated Gobles team. My recollection is that the problem was that Muskegon CC was a long, long ways away from anybody they could have been placed with in a District. I remember taking from that incident that the MHSAA must be pretty committed to whatever their geographic Districting principles were, because they could have shipped Muskegon CC into a District with weaker opposition (as a worthy "reward" for their strong regular season) and nobody would really have noticed, since it was going to be a hike for whoever ended up playing Muskegon CC. Like I say, it was a few years ago and I didn't pay as close attention then as I do now, so maybe I was way off.

Thanks applefan, Perhaps your freind had something like this: Beal City with Marion, Manistee CC and Frankfort MP Sacred Heart and Musk CC with Portland St. Pat, and BC St. Phil All Saints and Seminary with New Lothrop and Webberville It's just a guess, given the information you supplied. On a side note, if your friend had a map with projected pairings, he DOES make predictions. If he's with the MHSAA, it's probably wise not to share those predictions though.

However, Waldron or Pittsford would have to travel major miles. So that's why I wasn't about to run a ton of numbers to change D8 at least this week. GSM would be placed with the UP teams under my scenario.
