Traditional rivals GR Catholic Central and West Catholic now meet in the first game of the season. Thursday's game at West Catholic saw the home team WC Falcons take the field in mesh practice jerseys and undecorated helmets. Last year WC won 37-0 and the Falcons' fans thought that the torch had past to the Westsiders. So the idea was WC would 'Earn Their Stripes!' vs the Cougars, and the Touchdown Club would hand out the WC decals and jerseys immediately after the game.
(And since the parking at WC takes a long time to clear-it would also in front of the visiting Cougar fans.)
There is a sign under the scoreboard about the 'Stripes' also.
Now West is on the road for two weeks. Next week they face a tough Allendale team. Do you hand out the jerseys before the game? The game is a toss-up but obviously you can't have the visiting team having ceremony on someone else's field.
The third week game is Cedar Springs who lost 61-6 tonight so the Falcons will get a win there, but again a road game.
Interesting dilemma!
