Sounds like the 2 in the poll are the "obvious picks"....
Anyone else out there going to make some headlines? ? (Result)

As far as Jr. class QB's: Cody Kater - Montague. Probably somewhere around 6'3 - 190lbs by now. Started on Montague's Varsity as a Sophomore. Good
dual threat QB and all around athlete.
The Sr QB at Allendale should be good as should the Sr QB from Merrill, both had good Jr. seasons. |

Popp | #3 | ||

Don't overlook Frankie Popp from Brother Rice. The all-purpose QBs with size tend to get most of the ink, but Popp, a pro-style QB, may have a better arm
than both Gardner and Bolden. I'm not saying he will be a higher-ranked D-1 recruit, but he could end up having more passing success this year as well as
success as a team leader. He is bigger, stronger and has more passing accuracy than last year, when he started four games for Rice. He may still be
undersized for the BCS schools, but if he grows a couple inches, look out. I'm not taking anything away from Gardner and Bolden. FTR, in last year's
regular season game between Rice and OLSM (OLSM won 40-21), Popp had more passing yards than Bolden (136 to 95) more completions (14 to 7) and a longer long
(35 to 27). I'm not going to say that Popp is better than Bolden, but he should at least be included in the poll and he definitely is a Junior to watch.
Another good Junior is Jason Fracassa, Sterling Heights Stevenson. A starter since his Freshman year, Fracassa, didn't have much of a supporting cast last year and struggled. With some pass protection and somebody to throw to, Jason is as good as there is in the state.

How tall is Popp? ... I was a little surprised last year to see how small he was ... He didn't look like a typical Brother Rice quarterback, but of course
he was only a 10th grader at the time.
By the way both Gardner and Bolden have picked up some D1 offers recently. Gardner's from the Big 10 and Bolden from a MAC school.

Frankie was listed at 5'11 165 last year. I'd say he's grown a couple inches and gained 15 pounds. Still small by BCS standards, but his rocket arm will carry him a long way at the high school level. We'll have to see how well he scrambles this year. That was a shortcoming last year, but I think he learned a lot in that area. He has been looking good scrambling in the 7 on 7s, but then again I could scramble in a 7 on 7. If he were more of an All-Purpose QB, his size wouldn't be as much of a factor. |

Interesting ... I would have guessed closer to 5-8 or 5-9.
I guess the other players on the field must have been on the tall side to make him look smaller. (or an inflated roster listing?) I agree that Popp will be an excellent player at Brother Rice no matter where he projects on the college level.

Sorry Prep I agree with Searn, Popp may have been listed at 5-11 but he was closer to 5-9. He looks to be a great young QB, but lacks size. In addition he is a
traditional drop back QB which limits him in regard to moving to other positions as well as playing QB in a spread system or a system which profiles a dual
threat QB. Maybe he proves me wrong but at his point it is too early to tell if he is a legit D1 prospect.

As for Popp's height. I don't know if his roster listing is accurate. I can say that I have stood next to him and he is taller than I am. And, I am 5'10". Whether he is 5'10, 5'11, 6'0" or even 6'1", most major D-1 programs will say he is too small. That's a shame, since he is very good otherwise. |

My mistake prep, I forgot we were talking only junior QB's, JF has made some progress over the last few years but I'm not convinced that he is any
better than some of the JV QB's from Dakota,Ike and CV.

right, we were talking Juniors. Also, I didn't say he was the best. I made a parity claim by saying he had the potential to be as good as anyone. I know
it's a subtle distiction. But, an important one. Suffice it to say, he could be up there near the top, but I don't think he will be number one. Like
Popp, Fracassa may not have the size to be a big time D-1 recruit, even if he ends up being a great H.S. QB. Of course, there are a lot of good schools in
Div. 1 with scholarships/free education and the chance to play some football at the next level. Everyone doesn't have to go to a BCS school.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know were talking Jr.'s but part of the discussion is QB's and I dont weant to start a new thread.
This Jason Pratt kid from Merill who is 6'6 and closing in on 200 lbs is fricken amazing. I was just doing some research and the kid had like 1,200 yards rushing and 16 Td's to go along with his 2,871 passing yards and 30 Td's! Colleges mentioned are MSU and Maryland among others, but I dont think he's getting a ton of looks yet. Those are pretty impressive stats. I know nothing about Merill, but if you do, they might be dangerous again this Fall. Would be fun to watch. |

Prep, I thought I saw you post the Saturday date before but thought and hoped it was a typo on your part. So I looked on the Michigan-football website, and lo
and behold, both schools are listed as playing on Friday. But the BBR website lists the date and time you said. I am hoping against hope it is Friday, else it
is unlikely I will attend the game. Besides, how did BBR convince Muskegon to play a CHSL time instead of Friday as most of the public schools do?

Michigan-Football lists all games as Friday, whether they are on Thurs, Fri, Sat. or Sun. The 4:00 pm Sat. start was clearly to accommodate Rice's desire
to make it a day trip and not miss any school. They're doing an overnight trip to South Bend the following week. As part of the negotiations, Rice got
Muskegon to play the Frosh and JV games at BBR on Friday. All-in-all it's a good deal for Rice. They get two very good sub-varsity games at home and play
at Hackley on a Saturday afternoon. That's a great environment for a game and it should be a good one. The 4:00 pm Saturday start time will make it an
easy trip to and fro.

I believe he will have a break out season.
Nouvel's coach said he was the best QB they saw last year. |

i have to agree with some above, this kid can make things happen, but his ol was one of the wrost that i have ever seen at stevenson. he is tough as hell
though that kid got the snot knocked out of him and still threw for over 1400 yards on a pathetic team, he also had like 30 or so drops by recievers, if he
keeps getting better, and they can improve the team around him I think he can do some things.

In my opinion, Devin Gardner is by far the #1 junior in the state...more than likely, he will be the #1 player in the state next year...
