That is great Elderly. We would expect nothing less from John. He is a great athlete, and we will have our eye on him at WMU. On a similar subject, my wife and
I helped out at West Michigan Regional Special Olympics last weekend at EK. We were assigned the running long jomp. It was a terrific exprience. If you enjoy
track and field, go check out the Special Olympics in your area and watch/support these kids as they leave it all on the field.
GO EK!! |

The top seven qualifiers in the Division 1 high jump did so with jumps of 6' 5".
VERY INTERESTING! There are 28 qualifiers total - the last four registering only 5' 11". There are many kids who jumped higher than that in the regionals. Where you jumped must have a lot to do with making the list!

I cant seem to remeber but they have two ways to qualify. First thier is a minimal height/distance/time you have to meet. If you meet those you get to go. Next
is the placement at regionals. I think its top 3 or something of each regional move on as well.

It is the top 2 places at each regional that automatically qualifies for states in track and field. Then, there are the non automatic qualifiers who have to
meet another standard, which is average second place regional finish for the last 3 years. This is how people qualified for states when my oldest daughter
ran track.
Sometimes conditions do matter. However there is sometimes an unofficial benefit as well. I'm thinking of a certain Clarkston boys track and field star who didn't qualify for states in the 300 meter hurdles due to weather only to be able to concentrate on the 110 meter hurdles and finish second at the state meet.

A note on regional qualifiers: each school is allowed 2 per individual event and one for relays. The additional regional qualifiers has to have met the
average 6th place result for the last 3 years at the regional meets. Each class or division has their own standards. That about wraps it up as far as
qualifying for the regional meets and the state meet.

Micro-brag!
John tied for 8th place in the high jump! Grand Haven's sole score - a half-point - his last hurrah for the Bucs! Next week begins his football training - in earnest. He'll be attending one of the Ray Guy/Pro Kicker. Com Academies. |
