Brian Kelly or Chris Peterson. They both have done very well at "smaller" programs. They also are terrific motivators, have wonderful offensive
minds, and are great recruiters. I think Michigan needs to go outside the "Michigan Man" thinking and hire a coach who will liven things up and lead
the program in a bit of a new direction. These two men are also in their 40's which I think is a positive.

And GHS, the trouble with the entire "MI Man" hype is just that - It's hype. Heck Lloyd wasn't even a "MI Man" originally. He was
an "NMU, Mizzou, and EMU Man"
This all begs the question "At what point does a non Michigan Man become a Michigan Man?" (probably has something to do with Ws and Ls) |

True, but we're talking a HEAD COACH here not an assistant...BIG difference.

Bo himself was not a "MI Man" and I think he did OK. I think the whole "Michigan Man" thing gets blown way out of proportion. Bo said this when he was the AD and Bill Freeder (spelling?) said he was leaving after the NCAA tournament to go be the head coach at Arizona State I think it was. Bo said I will do you one better and you can leave now a "MI Man" will coach the Michigan basketball team. IMHO this was a good call on Bo's part. They are both offensive-minded coaches whose schemes and play-calls just don't work for the NFL. They have the same schemes as guys like Bobby Petrino (who will soon be heading back), Steve Spurrier, and Nick Saban. They have to realize by now that the little fun'n'gun offenses don't work in the NFL and their best choice is to stay in the NCAA. Michigan would never have the balls to hire a guy like Brian Kelly though. He's a total d*ck to anyone not part of the football team, the media would
hate him, the Michigan marketing department would hate him. He would get the job done and probably be THE best guy for it, but they'd never do it.

If he would make the move, Jeff Tedford.

I love the idea of Tedford too. One more name would be Rutger's Greg Schiano. He and Tedford have done wonders turning around programs the past five years.
Just imagine what men like that could do with Michigan's talent and resources. I'd rather have just about anybody over Miles...except for a current UM
assistant.

The question should be who would Bo select to be the next head football coach. The answer would be Ron English. Get it over with already and hire him.
Michigan has one of the brightest young football coaches sitting in front of them, don't let him get away.

I disagree with English, it was HIS defense that gave up 60+ points in the first 2 weeks of this season.
Fielding Yost, Fritz Crisler, Bo etc none of these guys were originally "Mchigan men" I like Paul Johnson and then Chris Peterson. Kle, any talk about any coaches scheme won't work here or there is hogwash my man. Spurrier flamed out in the NFL because he spent too much time playing golf and not enough time working on his trade. Pettrino probably planned things around having Vick AND its his first season lets reserve judgement on him for just a little while just yet.

I emailed Searn yesterday (I think this is correct) that Brian Kelly was a longshot for the Nebraska job. This link now confirms it. I personally believe
that Turner Gill might have the inside track to the Nebraska job though. Making this part of UM's coach since it involved one of the posters candidate for
the UM job.

BIGREDS89 wrote: I agree with Kle actually. I don't think the more "gimmicky" or "flavor of the month" offenses work well enough to win consistently in the NFL. Look at how unsuccessful the "run n' shoot" was. I think certain coaches and their philosophies are much better suited for one level over another. For example, offenses like the wishbone or the wing-t may do wonderfully on the high school or college level but they just don't fly in the NFL. nglish i |

KleShreen wrote: While I have no problem with the idea of Kelly as the next Michigan coach, the author's equation of Les Miles to Glen Mason is more than a bit ridiculous. Miles' resume is far stronger. BTW, in early 2001 the bigwigs in Columbus wanted Bob Stoops first and foremost, not Mason, then Mike Bellotti, only after that did people like Mason and Tressel come to the forefront. The key thing Michigan needs is a new approach. That doesn't mean a coach who yells a lot, but one who will shake things up, change the strength and conditioning program, change the obsession with execution to include a lot more gameplanning, and show confidence in players rather than coaching based on what one fears might go wrong. Either Kelly or Miles will fit that bill, because this is a program that needs more swagger. |

Bo is Michigan football ( at least since he took over) If he thought the value of staying in house was crazy, none of his followers would've been in charge. Look at Notre Dame and tell me they wouldn't have been a different program, if they wouldn't have built a ND family of coaches. And in reference to your 1st part, it's also his defense that was real expectional in 2006. What have you done for me lately. And for the record the big rumor right now is Miles to Michigan, Spurrier to LSU. Think LSU fans are praying Michigan takes Miles.....I guarantee they are. |

point is Qman and it is an undeniable point. the 3 most influential coaches in U of M history all came from programs other than Michigan. Nothing wrong with
looking outside the program this time either.

LSU would LOVE that. Miles isn't half the coach Spurrier is. People speak of Miles being a great recruiter, but in this year where Coach Carr's return
to Michigan was up in the air, Lloyd still outrecruited Les Miles and LSU. That speaks volumes to me. Check the Rivals rankings if you don't believe me.

I really REALLY don't want Miles. In my mind, that will be taking a step down.
If you look at LSU message boards, things are twice as bad with them as far as ripping on their head coach than it is with Carr and Michigan boards. Miles is an even WORSE in-game play-caller and does even less with his talent. It's just that LSU's talent is SO much more than Michigan's, at least recently. LSU has 5-7 commits annually playing in the Army All-American game...Michigan has had...1 a year? Maybe 2? If that. I pray PRAY it's not Les Miles. Michigan fans can settle into consistent 3-loss years then. 1 OOC game, 1 to Ohio State/Penn State/Wisconsin/Illinois, and 1 to any other Big 10 team. Grand Valley State - NATIONAL CHAMPS AGAIN!
