All-Searn Hall of Fame Posts: 4389 04/11/08 11:21 PM Board Owner http://michiganhsfootball.com http://ndfanzone.com	Tags : None Just watched some highlights on MichiganPreps.com ... and hard to believe that Inkster might not miss a beat at QB after losing Shavers to graduation. Even as a 10th grader in 2007 at U of D Jesuit, Gardner looked like a potential major D1 prospect. Listed at 6-5 and over 200lbs with athleticism ... with a little work on his passing game could be the top prospect in the state for the class of 2010. Along with the other transfers into the Viking program ... Including a target for Gardner in 4-star prospect Cameron Gordon ... Inkster looks like a force again in 2008. .. one of the favorites in D3? With the success of the program ... and the fact that Inkster is now a large class B school., .. we need to see this team compete week to week in the RED (assuming the Mega stays together). Unfortunately, .. Again in 2008, Inkster might only have 1 or 2 games to look foreward to. He certainly looks the part! Reminds me a of thicker version of Justin Siller (DP/OLSM) .... I think Gardner will end up a better runner. .. I have not seen enough of his passing game to really judge the passing game, but Siller was darn good as a 10th grader. Unlike Siller at the same age, I think Gardner almost has the frame for the next level. I doubt U of M wants to wait another year to bring in a top QB, but I think RichRod might want to spend some time around Inkster HS ASAP. (by over 200 kids) As much as I don't have a problem with a kid who is unhappy and wants to transfer ... and a big time transfer happens from time to time ... I would not prefer this to become a trend at Inkster or at any school. On the positive side for Inkster ... congrats you have become a destination instead of a dying school. With that being said it was one thing when Carter went to Inkster after SMD closed and alot of his kids followed him there. I can see that. I'm not necessarily blaming the school or coach, but I think this results from the kids. I would love to hear the details of the Gardner transfer. Why did he leave UDJ? Why did he choose Inkster? Was it that they had a need for a QB to replace Shavers? Did he have a past connection to Coach Carter? Did his family move to Inkster? Was it one of the few schools of choice? Was he actively recruited by Carter? The kind of athlete these transfer-oriented schools attract are part of this me generation who are thinking of themselves and not their new schools. They perceive that the transfer will help them obtain that big time scholarship and that's the reason for the transfer. It's not academics. Not a more convenient school. Not the social life. It's all about "me" and my future. Is that wrong. It's certainly not illegal. There is a certain amount of free choice involved in school selection. I do not think it's good for high school athletics, in general. Unfortunately, I don't think there's anything the MHSAA can do about it. It is curious that these transfers seem to always involve top athletes. Is it just that you non-athlete transfer doesn't get the publicity, or that there just aren't that many transfers that don't involve athletes. I suspect it's a little of both. Fortunately, it doesn't happen that much and you can count the number of transfer schools on one hand.

Since there is no person on the planet who doesn't think this is a sports-oriented transfer, why is Gardner not ineligible for one year rather than just one semester. I wonder if the transfer has anything to do with the fact Gardner was suspended for the first three games of last season. I think it was a suspension--don't know if it was grades or some other reason. I dan't imaagine it was grades at the beginning of the semester. Can someone post details. Maybe it's another Dion Sims situation, where his days at UDJ were numbered and he bailed for greener pastures. What other transfers have gone to Inkster this year? Dos'nt really matter what the reason is, again I have never been a fan of school of choice particularly for this reason. I gotta believe that the mhsaa does not like it either but what can they really do when the state of Michigan allows it to happen. Senior Posts: 124 04/12/08 11:33 AM Forum Donor	Like it or not, school of choice is here. I say that because it is part of the reason Gardner ended up at Inkster. Grades definately played a large part as to why he is no longer at UDJ and if I remember correctly, grades that were going to make it tough to find another private school to transfer into. Gardner is great talent that flourished in the UDJ spread offense in his freshman year. His soph year at UDJ was complete obscurity due to his initial suspension and the dismal year that UDJ had. Obviously only he and his family know the true reasons why he chose Inkster, but my guess would be the following. A potent spread offense that will attract college scouts attention. A public school (of choice) that would have to take him regardless of grades. A Detroit kid who very well may have ended up at SMD, were they still open and someone who is probably very familiar with Carter and his reputation from his SMD days and what he has done at Inkster the past few years. UDJ or not, I am sure that this kid and his family would like to see him in college and without UDJ as the vehicle to get him there and athletics being his in, Inkster becomes a very valid option to be that vehicle.

He wanted go to DePorres initially to play for Coach Carter, but after the closing selected U of D instead. 2. Coach Merchant leaving U of D after his freshmen year. 3. After a strong freshmen year (under merchant) had a tough sophomore year under the new staff. 4. Other talented underclassmen such as Dion Simms leaving U of D. I have no clue of academics played a part. Sounds like he must be happy at Inkster ... as it said he takes an hour bus ride to get there from Detroit every day. 4-star WR Cameron Gordon is a transfer from Melvindale ... .they also got a pretty good rb in Alan Freeman from Wayne Memorial. All-Area Posts: 79 04/12/08 5:59 PM	This is an Mlive rumor so I'm not sure if there is anything to it, but word is that Inkster might be the 4th team coming to Dakota for the 4 way pre season scrimmage in August. I can only hope it is true I would love to see how Inkster stacks up. I think the skill guys would make their plays but they would be vastly undersized and underskilled on the O and D line. Either way it would be a big plus to see Inkster come out, last year Lanse Creuse Central bailed and there was only 3 teams (Warren Mott,Detroit Finney) which makes it very difficult to run a scrimmage.

Sophomore Posts: 34 04/12/08 10:53 PM	Another thing to consider about Inkster High is that residents of the city of Inkster for the longest time have had the option of several school districts including: Taylor, Wayne-Westland, and Romulas. With a great coach like Carter a lot of athletes from the following districts will proably return "home' to play ball. You already see this with the Wayne Memorial transfers.

Sophomore Posts: 53 04/13/08 6:18 PM	To say Devin transfered for sports reason only is like a horse wearing blinders. Academics were certainly a central reason also. Plus he was on disciplinary probation at the beginning of the semester. Quarterback coach Whalen was not rehired his sophomore year. He had many reasons for transferring. His UDJ teammates wish him well.
