Any championship that can end in a tie, I have no interest in.
I know I would have been upset if I actually traveled down from Marquette to watch this game.

First of all, I don't believe you are done. You are just done today. Besides, if you didn't waste your time going to Compuware what is the big deal?
Second of all, this is just another example of how eff'ed the MHSAA is. Third, seems like the eaglets are somehow doomed to be bridesmaids. Although they have an outright chance in hoops later this week. |

You're right Searn this is an absolutely pathetic ending to a season.
And how about the coach and players talking about it being "history" and "we both won" and both "get rings?" I understand the coach might not want to tick off the MHSAA, but how can you feel good about this sort of nonsense? "Everybody's a winner" ... yeah, right. MHSAA needs to get a clue. |

It's not a big deal to me at all.
In the future I'm just not going to bother "looking" for scores and results, or looking for potential games to attend. If I happen to see the scores by accident then oh well. By the way, what would they have done if this was a semi-final game? Forget the state championship game and give the title to all 4 semi-finalist?Anything that has Co-Champions kind of sours me.... like Big 10 football.

Well, I really like HS hockey among other sports. As I said before, this is my favorite season when all sports are taken in the entirety. You can cactch a boys
hoops game on Friday, and a hockey gram on Saturday, girls hoops and wresting during the week, or a wresting tournament during Saturday - day and THEN go catch
a HS hockey game. (btw. Congratulations Trenton one of my favorite hockey teams won the Dividion 2 championship...I believe their 9th ever)
But you make a heckuva a point with this Searn-O: "By the way, what would they have done if this was a semi-final game? Forget the state championship game and give the title to all 4 semi-finalist?" Exactly what would those rim-rods at the MHSAA have done had a semi final game ended in a tie? I assume there has to be SOME tie breaker. Had common sense prevailed the officials would have been empowered to approach both teams/coaches to offer a shoot out/penalty shots. But of course in this litigious society, the losing district would end up challenging it in court. Honest to God, that was dumb dumb dumb. |

BR, Apparently the MHSAA wants everyone to get a *hug* and a cookie, after they come off the ice, just like YMCA and City Rec Leagues.
I can hear it now: "Yay Billie!!! You got a goal!!!! (into the wrong net) YAY!!!!! You got a goal!!!" "We don't keep score, but, YOU SHOT THE PUCK INTO THE NET!!!! YAY BILLIE!!! Here's your cookie and juice box. Now stay off the ice and sit down for a bit, we don't want you to throw up on your fuschia and teal uniform." |

I think it's probably best to hold off until the rumors about health issues are addressed (severe dehydration, etc). If it truly was a danger for them to
continue playing, that's different from just "it was almost midnight, people wanted to go home". Of course they could have treated it like a
rain delay in baseball and resumed play the next day. From what I was hearing on the radio broadcast, players with clear breakaways early in shifts were
having trouble moving in on net due to exhaustion, so OT was easier on the goalies than one would have expected.

Well, I guess they should have had a backup plan for such a situation.... how about a shootout after 4 OT's ... it would be a lot less stress on the players that way. Until they have a solution, I say finish the game with the players that could play.

Mlive is SCREAMING with this discussion. 4 pages worth.
Yep. MHSAA got pantsed. Just like they do with every new situation i.e. transfers. As per your point again Searn, just wth were they gonna do w/ teams tied in the semis? |

Oh well - it is what it is. I guess you can never anticipate 8 OTs, but I can bet the MHSAA will now have a contingency plan in all sports if an extrenuating
circumstance like that does happen again.

I actually think they did the right thing. When the kids health comes into play, they did the right thing. They thought about having a shoot out, but the rules
committee has not, as of yet, approved it. I like the idea of postponing, but that brings up the issue of extra cost to a team like Muskegon for their hotel,
food, transportation, etc. I know I am in the minority, but the kids safety should be made first priority.

pats99 wrote: Hockey????? we don't play hockey in Big Red land. I understand the health issue but they also could have came back the next day and resumed the game. Yes there would have been extra cost for food and hotel but lets be honest, there are not many poor kids playing hockey and booster money helps fund these hockey programs. They could have stayed the extra day gotten a result and kept all the kids safe. Your defeating the purpose of a tournament with something like this.

I totally disagreed with the decision until I read what I posted below...With that said, the MHSAA needs to implement a shoot out after a certain number of
overtimes

I totally agree with stopping the game after 8 overtimes. It is not worth risking the lives and limbs of these young men just to reach a conclusive result.
The real shame goes to the MHSAA for not having a policy in place to handle this circumstance. It should be something like 3 OT's and then a shootout. "The common man revels in HAVING WON. The champion finds his satisfaction in WINNING." - F.H. Yost

The MHSAA should have a shootout out at the end of 2 OT''s for high school hockey. This would solve their problem LOL!! This would be equivalent to
the OT in high school football.

Interesting situation, I'm not sure how it should have been handled, but the MHSAA dropped the ball on this one for sure.
There has got to be a letdown for these kids who went all out for over 4 hours with no result and a cochampionship. During my sports career I tied one game. It was the biggest football game of the year for 5th and 6th graders, what were supposed to be the two best teams --- and the winner was to take the division title. The game ended in a 0-0 tie (no overtime). I still remember the faces of my teammates to this day, it was exactly the same as if we lost the game. (some kids with tears) It was a big downer. Anyway, we got lucky and the other team lost their game next week and we still won the division. I was lucky to have a lot of W's in my football career and very few losses (quick calc says (71-5-1) in 9 seasons) but I've always put that tie game right with the losses, because the feeling is exactly the same. All we knew is that we didn't win. |

I think they should do a two-frame roll-off...Oops, wrong sport....
I think a shootout after one OT would have worked in this instance. The MHSAA, unfortuantely, doesn't think ahead in some sports. This is example number one... Bring back my show, "The Arena", to Battle Creek, please!!! Call my boss! |

I agree 100% that the MHSAA needs to figure out a way to determine a champion, or even a winner come playoff time. I have no problem whatsoever with one OT
followed by a shootout.
Having said that, however, it was cool to read how the players from both teams were sincerely happy for one another. What an incredible sense of mutual respect and admiration there must have been after the game. This would not have happened had one team won after 1 OT + shootout. ![]() |
