The date of the Austin groundbreaking was sent out via invitation to specific people - not saying that I am one of those people, but I know people who go the
invite and told me about it.

As a former 3 Year Varsity Football player at The University of Detroit Jesuit, I must say that you hit the nail on the head. I played for U of D the very
first year we entered the Central Division and believe me, it was rough but we didn't quit and we didn't want to go back to playing Shrine...LOL...We
took change as a challenge and we faced it. The competition was a little stiffer and we had to man up and take it. To truly appreciate victory, you must first
be able to handle defeat. All this 0-9 record is telling the schools athletic dept, is that it is time to step up the recruitment game. They are in the heart
of Detroit and can't seem to get good athletes on the field. That's something that needs to be addressed. Not taking the easy route and bowing out of
the Central. We fought to get in the Central and was proud to get there and it would be a shame as well as an embarrassment to all of those that faced the
challenges that the division brought us to see them punk out.

rayg111, nice to see you here and expressing your views. I talked with one of your former teammates (former starting QB) and a teacher at UDJ (think track) and
they expressed a similar statement and frustration - they are not happy with what happened in terms of football.
It looks as though UD isn't opting out of the Central, rather being allowed to not play certain teams - for 2008 it was going to be OLSM and CC, but UDJ agreed to play OLSM Week 2, so they are not playing CC. UDJ will still be allowed to compete for a spot in the Prep Bowl and still considered a member of the Central Division. But for a school of over 700 boys in the high school, it still looks weak. |

If UD insists on doing this then they should be out of the Central as a stand alone CHSL team.
At that point they can just schedule whoever they want within the Central .... but in my opinion should not be eligible for the Prep Bowl.

Well, I guess this "pansy" approach from UD is part and parcel to the reason why Merchant is no longer there. Yes, Scott left on his own terms, but
he obviously saw the writing on the wall. The coming years will only cement the incredible job he did there and I hope they realize the incalcuable loss when
he left. Although there were some in his corner, many over there just could not handle the intensity he brought to the football program, both during and off
season. UD prides itself on it's academic standards, and rightly so, but there is a way to maintain those standards and still excell on the football field.
Merchant brought that program back to prominence and although there were 5-4 & 4-5 years sprinkled in there, I have to believe that Cubs, past and present,
will soon be longing for those years. Scott is intense and often wears his heart on his sleeve and that sometimes drove away some kids and parents that I would
consider the weak of heart and mind, but the UD admin and the AD would have been better served to wave goodbye to those weak minded individuals and adopt some
of the Mechant intensity and did all they could to keep him there. It appears to me that if the present mind set continues, UD football will be relegated to
the same pre Merchant obscurity. What a shame for a school of 700 boys, who with the move of CC to Novi, was and is in it's best position to attract the
kids of Livonia and Redford and Westland and Detroit who would have otherwise gone to a Redford CC.

Kay, U of D has an extensive and mature alumni program, and I am guessing benefactors and endowment to boot....I think the best in the CL. What do you think
their influence, if any, may be in this situation?
