Detroit King upsets the highly favored Highlanders of Rochester Adams!
Wow! It sure was awesome to be there! I see I didn't miss anything in the UM-OSU game either. It looks like I picked the better game between this and
CC-Dak because I was rooting for CC to win. IMO Adams and King were very evenly matched. They both played tough defense this afternoon. RA was impressive
offensively with pulling off their fakes well in the first half. They also blocked two King punts. The difference though may have been King's passing
game and their defense in the second half. The best player on the field IMO was King's Nick Perry. He had at least three sacks and one interception from
his MLB spot. I'm sure hoping he signs with Michigan or Michigan State, but the word at the game is he likes USC. Adams has some impressive skill players
led by Brandon Conner and Josh Renel. They also had a long passing touchdown called back which would have possibly tied the game. I believe it was an illegal
motion penalty. King was led offensively by the combo of Donovan Dickerson to Flenard Whitfield through the air and the tough running of Darin Williams.
King's OL averages about 6'3"-260 lbs. Whitfield is listed at 6'6"-220 lbs at his WR spot. I really wish he was playing football in
college but he recently signed with WMU for basketball. Hopefully King's big win puts to rest some of the stereotypical talk of a PSL team not being
disciplined or well-coached enough to win against a top-notch suburban team. I expect MLK to give Lowell all they can handle next week at Ford Field. I think
Lowell has more overall speed than RA and it should be a dandy of a D2 Final. Congrats Crusaders on an awesome victory today. You've made the city proud
and we look forward to your representing the whole east side at Ford Field. Go King!
ps...Ferndale High School shouldn't be hosting a game of this magnitude IMO. The stands are WAY too small. The SRO crowd was literaly 3-4 deep all along
the fences. The MHSAA needs to do a much better job in the future choosing larger sites. I was able to procure a seat on MLK's side arriving a half-hour
before game time fortunately.

My bad...it appears Midland came back from a 28-14 deficit and knocked off Lowell 31-28. Wow! Anyone know anything about Midland???

You think you seen an awesome game where you were but I think I may have witnessed the best high school game ever. I have a nephew playing on the line and just
recently started to follow Midland through the playoffs. In the first half they had no answer for Lowell's QB option and they just couldn't establish
any kind of running game. At the half I told my brother -in -law that Midland needed their junior QB to be the MVP of the game in order for them to win but
that whole team seemed to be on a mission. Great catches by receivers, excellent line blocking, defensive adjustments, fake punt that worked, hook and ladder,
a high kickoff recovered by Midland all ending with six ticks left on the clock with Lowell having no timeouts left with the ball on the one yard line and
their QB spiking the ball on 4th down giving the ball back to Midland. MLK better have a lot of heart and play four full quarters against this team cause they
sure dont have any quit in them. This is not there first comeback in theses playoffs either. They should have lost to Saginaw Aurther Hill. I expect Midland
to give MLK all they can handle next week at ford Field.

They don't have too much talent outside of Maxwell and Robertson, but they are very disciplined and play great together. It helps that they have one of the best coaches possible. Terry Wilczek is great, especially in the 2nd half after he has a chance to make adjustments. If the game vs King is close at half, I would look for Midland to really buckle down and look impressive in the 2nd half. Points for King will be hard to come by after they come out of the locker room. Hence why Midland came back from 28-7 down late in the 2nd quarter for a 31-28 victory. What Shreen said is on target.
Midland's biggest worry about MLK is the receiver. In Midland's two losses their biggest problem was covering a great receiver (Mills at Mount Pleasant and Ward at Flint SW). Midland is not a huge team (several big kids of course), they are deceptively fast, especially on the line and at linebacker. They were able to hold their own against the after-burners backfield at Bay City Central and the speedsters with Arthur Hill. Some of their secondary players don't match up great speedwise against opponents, so the big play is always a concern. On offense what differentiates this Midland team from past teams is the balance. They're going to force the opponent to decide whether to focus on the run or the pass, and they'll take what's given to them. Maxwell has really matured this year, but just as important has been the development of the receivers. Last year's team dropped a lot of passes that were on target. This year they're catching those and many that are not quite on target. Against Lowell it became apparent that Lowell was going to stop the run at all costs, so Midland spread it out and let Maxwell throw 48 passes for over 300 yards and 4 TDs. I'm guessing the attempts and yardage are both school records by a wide margin; Midland's identity is as a running team but Maxwell's talent has allowed them to use a varied offensive approach. As has been true with every game in this playoff run, it should be a really interesting matchup of two contrasting styles. |

He should be their biggest worry on King's offense. But on defense, Midland might want to worry a tad about 6'4"-240 lb. LB Nick Perry. He's up to 30+ sacks on the year heading into the State Championship game. Midland could be in trouble if they pass as many times as they did against Lowell. How mobile is the Chemics QB? He sounds like a good one. |

Midland's an excellent screen team and the coaches have had to go against some great DL and LBs like Clifton Ryan and LaMarr Woodley in past seasons. The coaches wouldn't hesitate to draw them in then throw it to the RB just beyond them. Should be a good chess match. Maxwell is not a scrambling quarterback, but he does have good footwork, much better than he did as a freshman two years ago. One of the key plays in the Lowell game was on 4th and 8 (with Lowell up 28-24) where Maxwell sidestepped the blitz, who got only a bit of jersey, then threw off his back foot but got enough on it to hit the receiver in stride at the sticks (said receiver was tightly covered but the throw was perfect). On the other hand, he'll get into ruts where he sails passes. |

King's go-to WR is also their star DE...

It's all good Kle. Nick Perry did catch 14 balles our of his TE position I just discovered. Whitfield is the big-play wideout though. I admire your knowledge and love for the game of football. I especially appreciate your GVSU info. I love the Lakers and follow the team quite closely. I used to date a GVSU alum and I sport my GV hat with pride. They have the best looking unis/helmets I've ever seen. |
