Season: 41-6
It's been a while since we've had a week 12 in the Metro. My guess is that you have to go back to Tim Shaw's senior year to find a Metro team that made it to the third week of the playoffs.
Mick McCabe came out with his prediction today in the Free Press. Here's what he had to say:
"Harper Woods (11-0) at Blissfield (11-0), 7 tonight. With all due respect to both of these football teams, this would be an even better matchup if it came in the baseball state tournament. Can you imagine Blissfield baseball coach Larry Tuttle calling the plays for the football team? Only if John Vandecaveye gets to be Blissfield's defensive coordinator. Harper Woods 21, Wedding Bliss 17.Harper Woods (11-0) at Blissfield (11-0), 7 tonight."
You can find all of his third round picks at http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071109/SPORTS09/711090399/1057/SPORTS
I wonder if it's some sort of omen that McCabe (or more likely his editor) neglected to apply a goofy nickname like "Harper Weeds" to the Pioneers.
Blissfield features a balanced attack. Against Monroe St. Mary, Luke Shrader rushed for 76 yards, Zach Waldvogel rushed for 74 and quarterback John Estes passed for 107, including a Hail Mary (described by one observer as a "moon ball" with no time left to edge St. Mary.
Like Harper Woods, Blissfield is new to the third round of the playoffs. In 2004, the Royals snuck in at 5-4 but were eliminated by Monroe St. Mary, and in 2005 Blissfield went 9-0 in the regular season and defeated Bishop Foley in the first round before being sent home by, that's right, Monroe St. Mary.
I expect that Blissfield may have spent a lot of emotional energy getting by their old nemsis Monroe St. Mary in most dramatic fashion. Harper Woods played a fine game in dispatching Beecher. The difference in this game appears to be Harper Woods's big play potential. Blissfield held Hudson to 6 points and Monroe St. Mary to 19, but I don't see them limiting the Harper Woods attack similarly. Harper Woods 28, Blissfield 20.
