First, I know that the Lions are going to be bad until the team is sold so it is useless to discuss this. However just like spring training for baseball, attitudes are good at the beginning of the season for football as well and it all stems from the draft choices and free agent signings.

Here is Mike O'Hara's projected first round pick for the Lions:

Personally, I don't think that this will pan out. The Lions have already been burned by taking 3 WR's pretty early in the draft.

The NFLNetwork people say that the Lions need a QB and a DB.

If I'm the Lions GM, I start from scratch to build a team. This means that I would start with both lines. The Lions allowed 60+ sacks last year while only sacking the opposing QB 28 times or something close to that. This is pathetic and something needs to be done to close the gap. This is one of the reasons why the Lions only won 3 games last year.

I am projecting that the Lions will trade down to pick up another draft pick.

Then, I would take OT Thomas from Wisconsin with my pick. With the second pick I would take a DE since that position is suppose to have depth on the defensive side of the ball. The Lions did address the OL via free agency, but one of the projected starters is coming off injury. So I build up some depth there.

Plus by trading down the Lions will pick up additional draft choices in this draft or the future, which will help to build up the team faster.

That would be great if they could trade down a few picks, .. get and additional pick and still be able to pick up a player like Joe Thomas ...

Maybe we're dreaming on that scenerio.

Way up a #2 considering the $$$$ you are going to have to pay for a player at #2 ... I think you have to take the best player available regardless of need.

I'm not sure if I like Adrian Peterson or Calvin Johnson better at #2 if Russell is gone.

If he can stay healthy I like AP better ..

I'm not convinced on Russell either ... ya he has all the tools ... but playing QB in the NFL seems to be 80% what you have between the ears ... and most of the QBs projected have the physical skills to be a starting QB in this league if they can make good decisions and are guru's in the film room.

To me Brady Quinn has almost the physical skills of Russell and a lot more experience in an NFL type system to this point ... and from all reports Quinn has it together in the head ... so we'll see.

If we could guarantee some stability on the Lions coaching staff and systems I would say take Quinn... let him sit behind Kitna for a season or two... .then who knows.

I initially did not like Calvin Johnson as the #2 pick. I was basing my opinion on past draft busts. I then realized that I had doubts about Charles Rogers and his maturity (from stories circulating through the press and otherwise), and I also had doubts about Mike Williams and his taking a year off from football, after trying to duck in the draft on the coattails of Maurice Clarett. If the Lions make it known they are going to take Johnson, maybe they can entice another team to trade up (Tampa? Atlanta?) and make a deal for more picks. I like Mr. NCAA's strategy, but no trades have been made in the top 10 over the last two years, so I think that is a reach. If they cannot move down, draft Johnson.

I think the Lions have already signaled this as their strategy, as they have picked up several RB's and OL's through trades and the free agent market. My favorite: Mulitalo from Baltimore. This guy has been a real mauler in the past with a nice nasty streak. I see him as an upgrade at guard.

On the NFLNetwork show Path To The Draft, they announced that according to the Denver Post that the Broncos offered their 2007 first, second, and third round picks plus an undisclosed top pick in 2008 NFL draft for the Lions 2007 first round pick.

The Lions turned it down since they aren't looking to move that far down. Plus the Broncos would have to offer more in return than what they did for the trade to be completed.

It was a 2008 first round pick as well so the Lions might have given it serious consideration. It sounded on the show that it was a third or somewhere close in that range.

In my opinion the Lions and Millen missed the boat on that deal. That would have givin them 5 picks in the first 3 rounds.

I'll bet that deal will be still on the table on Saturday. If the Lions can package something to get back into the top ten or Denver can sweeten the deal…

It (the report) also gives the other teams a barometer of what they need to offer the Lions.

There are a couple of other NFL teams that are interested in acquiring Calvin Johnson. Tampa Bay is one such team and they draft 4th.

I went with my first impression based on the Path To The Draft show when it sounded like it was a 2008 3rd or 4th round draft choice. Seeing how it turned out to be a first round, I would have placed Denver on hold and got in touch with the other teams interested in drafting second. If no one responded, I would have pulled the trigger since the Lions need a ton of help and this would have given them 3 additional picks in 2 years.

Detroit Lions gave up 2600 points in the proposed trade to the Broncos.

I will add up how much that they would have received in return.

Even if the Broncos ended up at 21 for next years draft, the point value was terrible for the trade since the Lions would have received 2055 points in return and possibly lower if the Broncos did better this fall than 21.

So the Lions probably did a wise thing a waited until tomorrow.

I couldn't locate Mike O'Hara's draft chart online that he published earlier this year, but if memory serves me right, it was the same as this or close to it.

Lions draft take so far ...

Aside from a physical freak like Calvin Johnson, who is beleived to be possibly the top player in the draft .. I'm not impressed so far.

Past Millen drafts have gotten some rave reviews from the "experts" and that did not work out .. I guess we'll have to wait and see on this group as well.

I hope Drew Stanton works out being a local kid ... but I would have rather seen possibly a LB pick at that spot.

Oh well!!!!!

Tim shaw just got drafted at number 164. that be 5th round, 27th pick from carolina. Not bad for somebody I did not hear a lot about.

Need to find a facility or find infomation about a facility for High School Football in the State of Michigan. Come to Michigan High School Stadium Site for a visit and to find the info you are looking for.

Besides CJ and Stanton I never really heard of any of the Lions picks so I guess it's just time to cross fingers and hope it works out.

If they can patch together a decent OL I think the Lions should at the very least be entertaining in 2007. A second year in Martz' system ... and it seems like the trio of Williams, Johnson and Furry should be one of the top WR trios in the league ... even though the same was to be thought about Williams, (Mike) Williams and Chuck Rogers and it never worked out.

Adding Bell and Duckett as an insurance policy was nice in case Jones never comes back 100% ...

Kitna seems to be at least serviceable for the next year or two ... I have no reason to think Stanton or Orlovsky is the answer beyond Kitan but I guess we'll find out eventually.

I didn't believe the people that were telling Darius Walker (RB,ND) he would be around a 3rd round draft pick and convinced him it was time to leave college early .. BUT ... I also did not think that he would go undrafted... hopefully he can pick the right spot to try out and maybe become a nice 3rd down back somewhere down the line.

I have not looked close enough to notice anyone that stood out as being undrafted.

In response to the drop of Brady Quinn... he may have lost out big time financially by not being picked by the Browns at #3 but #22...

But he certainly has a better chance now in Cleveland now that they were able to pick someone up to watch his backside!

On the field it's a bonus ... big negative in the checkbook....

I think I read that the difference in $$ from pick #3 to #22 last year was something like $49,000,000

dont forget, that former ND qb did say that you make your money in the 2nd contract signing. So no matter what happens I think he still will get paid well. You also have to consider that he will stil make the big bucks. BTW cleveland did a great job in that draft by doing that.

As for Detroit, well they did a fine job. Getting the number of picks they did in the first 100 picks was awesome. Now they have a good draft and some free agents can they put it together on the field.

I guess and from the looks of the commercials during the draft BQ may have some good endorsement $$$ lined up already... You only make the big bucks during your 2nd contract when you get it done of the field ... and hopefully that is the case.

BQ has Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow to throw to .. if those guys ever stay healthy .. and some decent backs .. .hopefully Joe Thomas can help solidify the OL.

I was hoping BQ would go somewhere where he can sit behind a Vet QB for a few years and learn before he starts .... I'm not sure if that is the case in Cleveland.

Agreed, Boeing. I was unimpressed by the Lions draft. Why am I not surprised?

Did anyone else think Stanton would be available later if you wanted to pick him up?

I also agree with the Cleveland assessment. I thought they did well. If Edwards and Winslow stay healthy, they could be dangerous.

Hard to disagree with that ... BUT... I can't help but think of some of the past drafts where I thought the Lions may have landed an A or and A+ draft and they turned out to be a big bust for the most part. ... HOPEFULLY, I'm the dummy on this one and they made some good picks

I'll add a few comments since the draft is over.

Was I happy with the Lions picks? No. I would have traded down and not taken CJ. Witness the negative comments on his NFL.com player analysis. However, I wouldn't give them a F like a couple of people did. On the NFLNetwork show "Path To The Draft" Drew Stanton was listed on the fifth best quarterback on the TV screen, but multiple commentators kept talking like he was the third best QB in the draft. They did this in more than one show. Only on draft day did Mayock leave Stanton off his top 5 QB list. I thought that was rather strange since he had positive comments on Stanton in the past. The UH defender was at one time Mel Kiper's 23rd best player in the draft so that was a good choice despite the fact that the Lions had other needs.

This wasn't a good draft year dispite some people's opinion on here. Gaines Adams, taken at #4 for Tampa Bay, is such a poor run defender and I imagine NFL teams will just run over him.

There's a reason why I dropped my emotional attachment to the Lions 3 years ago and this draft basically solidified my position.

Whoop di de freakin' do on CJ as he's no Jerry Rice. Here is his negatives from NFL.com:

Negatives: Has good overall body control, but sometimes does not play up to his timed speed … Even though he has good leaping ability, his timing is sometimes off, as he doesn't win as many jump-ball battles as you would expect from a player of his size and arm extension … Demonstrates good toughness battling for the ball, but he has also left quite a few passes on the field, perhaps due to poor passing precision from the quarterback position, but he has caught only 127 of 271 passes thrown to him … For a player over 6-foot-4 and with his jumping skills (45 inches) along with his long reach, it is hard to imagine the smaller cornerbacks having success in batting away 21 of those passes thrown to him the last two-plus years … Better down field than on deep routes, as he tends to lose sight of the ball over his head … Has some hip stiffness when trying to change direction and this will sometimes prevent him from making sharp cuts (takes wasted steps) … Needs to show better hip sink on his cuts … Tends to lose concentration working in a crowd, leading to several missed opportunities (hears defender's footsteps) … Gets his feet down properly when working along the sideline, but must be more alert to the quarterback scrambl … Despite his strength, he will struggle and get frustrated by a physical jam.
