While there is some merit there (look at the mid-90s with losses to Seaholm, Berkley, and Grosse Pointe North in the playoffs), I think it's frustration on
his part as a Rice fan because the team, I would guess, was probably looking past Lakeland and in doing so, was outplayed from the beginning of the game.

I wouldn't say that Rice was outplayed at all. They won every statistic and led until the last minute. They fell short on three key plays. Give
Lakeland credit for making those plays. Two of the three resulted in touchdowns. That was the game. You were right Boeing. My reference was to the early
playoff exits from losses to Berkley, Grosse Pointe North and Seaholm. This one felt like those. Everyone has those games. Nothing seems to go right. You
play hard. But the underdog team seems to get all the breaks and bounces. They even got the breaks from the refs last night. I talked to one Lakeland fan
before the game and he actually referred to one of the refs by name. How often do you see that. There were a ton of holding calls--even more than
normal--that were not called on Lakeland. They also seemed to get better spots and a slower play clock. I don't think it was my imagination or sour
grapes. I know the MHSAA asigns the crew, but I also assume they don't bring refs over from Macomb County to do the game in White Lake. They get refs
from that area and it sure seemed like they had their favorite team last night. I don't think Rice was looking ahead. I just think Lakeland surprised
them with their speed and determination. Still Rice won everything but the game.

Dont you just hate it when you get those kind of ref's? And dont anyone tell me it doesnt happen - I have seen it many times with my own eyes. Sounds
exactly what OLSM ran into when they played Trenton at Trenton, oh NO, thats a decade ago already. Had one official tell a players parent (an acquaintance but
unaware of her daughters team) walking in together at a girls District Final that WLN would get blown out by at least 25 points that night. Sadly, after being
up by 5 with 3 minutes, WLN could not hang thru. Many examples in game would prove such homerism. Some stuff the average fan would not have noticed. Happened
again a few years later whan openly a number of opponents players hugged the officials as they walked on the court, only a district game that time but the same
result. Simply unbelievable!

It can't be worse than a CHSL team getting homered by a CHSL crew in the playoffs, which is what happened last night at the DLS game.

I was told by DLS players that have close friends on BR that they had a sign hanging in the locker room all week that said Beat the Pilots. Is that true? If
true, I would certainly say they were looking past Lakeland.

I just don't think the CHSL teams were "all that" this year ... Though I think the world of the Pilots and see them at Ford Field
Even though I did think CC and Rice were a bit down ... I did expect both to win this week. Hopefully for the CHSL ... DLS can pick up the slack. |

Someone I know very well told me that Lakeland played very well with Rice, and seemed to have field position and possession more than half the game. That does
not square with what Prep is saying, and I am guessing he has the stats to back it up. But from that fan's perspective, Lakeland was playing with BBR every
step of the way.
I must say, I am shocked. More so than the Stevensons CC result. |

game was played fair and square, and penokie made a great catch. Kudos to maltese for calling that play on a 4th and 1.

Rice-Lakeland | #10 | ||
BiasedGuy wrote: Biased, In my game review at www.prepseer.com I said that BBR won just about every statistic. That was true. One that they didn't win was time of possession. I think Lakeland had six more minutes of possession time, so your friend was right, Lakeland possessed the ball more than 50% of the time. It was even more noticeable in the second half when Lakeland our-possessed Rice by a 2-1 margin. Of course, time of possession can be misleading. If you score quickly, you don't need to possess the ball a long time. On the other hand, if the other team is controlling the ball AND SCORING at the end of long drives, it's hard to win the game. Rice certainly had its chances, but Lakeland came up big on a few key plays and that was enought to give them the W. One of the key turning points was when Rice had the ball with three minutes left and the lead. Lakeland had two timeouts left. Rice gained about 5 yards on first down. It looked like Henneghan was going to get more than five, but Lakeland made a great stop. On the next two plays, Lakeland stuffed Rice. It forced a punt and gave Lakeland an opportunity to drive the field and score, which they did. That three and out series was crucial. One first down there and Rice probably runs out the clock. As for the referring referred to in the above post, it was pretty clear that Lakeland was getting the breaks in two areas. They were not being called for holding all night--until the one call that nullified a touchdown. And the ref was late starting the play clock and it gave Lakeland a big advantage because they were slow getting plays off all night. Because of all the non-calls on holding throughout the game, I was shocked that a flag was thrown on the touchdown. Before the hold was signalled, two refs conferred at mid field. I was certain they would decide to pick up the flag and wave off the penalty. I guess they figured they couldn't cover up that one and decided to let the penalty stand. The other play I can't wait to see on film is the roughing the punter non call. Yesterday in the Penn State-Iowa game, an Iowa player got flagged for a 15 yard roughing the punter penalty when he barely touched the punter's foot on a near block. In fact the punter actually kicked the Iowa player, not the other way around. And Iowa gets flagged for roughing. That made me think about Friday night when the Lakeland player actually ran into the Rice punter and knocked him to the ground. The ref saw the whole thing and didn't throw the flag. You never like to see a high school kid get flagged for arguing a call, but no one can criticize Charles for arguing that one. I don't know what he said to the ref to get flagged. But, it was justified. I hope Rice send a tape of this game to the MHSAA. I knew before the game there might be a ref problem. I was talking to a Lakeland fan and he referred to one of the refs by name. How often do fans know the refs names. You can be assurred that the entire crew was probably from the Milford/White Lake area or at least from the general KLAA North area. Throw in the CHSL hatred/jealously and you have a potential bias combined with the ability to subtely control the game. Unfortunately, it happens all the time. |

lol. Nice touch in sweeping out the trash. You know who I am thanking. And YOU know whose garbage I am referring to. That one is going to bear watching.
Aside: Thank you for the reply Prep. Ppl on Mlive been talking about your blog, and I have been referring them to respond on there as well. I told em that unless they went over the top, you would not delete or censor their posts. I haven't checked since then to see if they did. I hope you don't mind. EDIT - and within minutes another greasy skidmark had to be laundered. I saw the nimrod ID, on this thread, so I can only imagine the brilliance the post contained. But by the time I opened up the thread, the stain was removed. Lesson kiddies. If you are going to post garbage, then at least have the brains to post in on the M(orons)Live forum

I am a Canton fan ,so I don't have a dawg in this fight . I have read the Prepseers Blog and check it for weekly picks and the commentary ,and I have
enjoyed his observations . But this is over the top , a crew of officials conspired to rob BR of it's rightful victory ....please . High school football
teams are composed of young men who play for the love of the game and should be encouraged by adult fans ,not taught the "we waz robbed " mentality
. A bad crew might have been assigned to the game , and that is not good for the game of football , but howls of those guys stink doesn't bring em running
to become a part of much needed officials in high school sports .

I too believe that teams take care of business by playing above the refs. Good matchup for your Chiefs this week Semperfi. I think LSHS gives you a game.
Prep, let me say that your punter comes from his *ah* spiritedness, naturally, and um, genetically. lol |

semperfi9 wrote:I don't recall ever spouting the conspiracy theory. I just related my observations that blatant holding was not being called on Lakeland and that a roughing the punter call was not made when it should have been made. It smelled like someone didn't like BBR and wanted Lakeland to win. That doesn't require a conspiracy. One ref can do a lot of damage if he wants to. I'm not saying Lakeland didn't derseve to win. I'm saying that I am going to view the game tape with a lot more interest than I usually have. There's not a football fan alive that hasn't seen a poorly refereed football game. There can be a lot of reasons for the poor refs. Bias is just one. Maybe the refs, or some of the refs were simply incompetent. Or they had a philosophy to let the kids play and that's why they let so much of the holding go. |

Prep wasn't kidding when he said the Brother Rice underachieved in his opinion. Check Prepseer's All-Metro Team
14 Rice Players! And of the teams that defeated Brother Rice -- only 4 Delasalle players, only 3 players from Lakeland and 4 players from OLSM. |

Prep ,like I said I enjoy your commentary ,and I was shocked that you were so adament . It just suprised me usually you are spot on and give a dispassionate
report of a game .I apoligize for my misread of your post and hope the game tape becomes available to all so it can be checked out . BG .I am tickled that
Canton has won so far , I thought that next year was when they would make a deep run . The offensive line has been outstanding ,but the defense makes every
game a nail biter .

Semperfi, (and I know this is no longer a CHSL post) but DEFENSE is/was the surprise for me and LSHS this year. Now admittedly this was not a vintage line year
for CC. But the SHS defense is what stole the game on Friday night. Go back 2 autumns ago. There was an overachieving CC team going into Stevenson, and most
picked the Spartans to win. But the CC D held Stevenson to one TD. Final score was something like 49-7 CC.
Anyway, I think that is the real difference in SHS this year. Obvi White is a great FBaller, and their QB is no slouch either. I think your Cheifs have their hands full. Should be an Excellent game. Tough to pick agains the Chiefs at home, but I am leaning Stevenson. |

Thanks for your comments. I'm glad you enjoy my site. I actually edited my game review the morning after I posted it to remove most ofd the officiating comments. I also thought that the report should be more of a factual report and less editorial commentary. It's possible you read the original review, which did state my opinion of the officiating. Good luck to Canton this week. |
