The top 2 in the PSL experiencing the same thing as the CHSL in past seasons ....

Might be a good time to see if the PSL teams would want to do a crossover with the CHSL week 9 instead of the PSL championships ....

By Vincent Goodwill Jr. The Detroit News DETROIT - Detroit Southeastern quarterback Edward Thomas heard the whispers about him not being a clutch player and wanted to prove his doubters wrong. His coach, Donshell English, coach, just wanted him to stop thinking and play. Thomas helped turn the PSL championship game from a close one into a rout with his second-half performance as Southeastern won its first city title in 34 years, beating Cass Tech, 36-13, on Saturday at Detroit Renaissance. Thomas was 8-for-14 with 165 yards and three touchdown passes, including two to receiver Darryl Pitts, as Southeastern turned a 13-8 deficit into a showcase for its many skill players against a Tech team it defeated, 20-12 a few weeks ago. "People called me a choker in big games, so I wanted to play Cass again," Thomas said. "They were our best competition and I wanted to prove myself. I think I did that." While Thomas was eager to play Tech again, English made no bones about not wanting to play his alma mater one more time, admitting it was tough going against a team he once suited up for. "I love my school (Cass)," he said. "I'll always want them to finish second to our first." "I didn't want to play them two times, I don't want to play them three times. Please, I hope the state is (paying attention). Please don't put us in the same bracket." Selection for the state playoffs is Sunday. English had high praise for Thomas. "We knew what we have in Ed, he's a wonderful talent," English said. "The only problem we ever have is that he thinks too much. If he just plays and does what we ask him to do, we're fine. As you can see, he did a fantastic job with the long ball." "I was more patient this time," Thomas said. "I let the plays develop. I took advantage of the safeties. I didn't throw any interceptions." Actually, he did, and it came during a momentum-turning drive before halftime when Southeastern (8-1) was behind. Tech quarterback Thomas Gordon, playing safety, picked Thomas off but the play was nullified because of a personal0foul penalty against Tech with less than three minutes left in the first half. After two more Tech penalties, tailback Donovan Wilson (12 carries, 98 yards) scored on a 4-yard run to give Southeastern the lead for good. Thomas then picked apart Tech (7-2) with his many options. He found Erick Whitaker for a 43-yard reception, then hit Pitts on a fade route for a 9-yard score three plays later. The next drive, he hit Pitts again for a score - this time from 23 yards. Pitts bumbled the ball in the end zone amongst double coverage before securing it. "Pitts came up with some crucial plays," English said "He's been hurt for the last two weeks. He kept saying he was ok and we finally trusted him. He came up with two spectacular catches and that's what got us over the hump." Tech's Michigan commitments, Teric Jones and Gordon, had their moments, but were held in check for the most part. Jones had 21 carries for 100 yards Southeastern struck first with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Thomas to receiver William Sturgis. Tech responded with a 79-yard, 14-play TD drive that took 7:35, capped off by a 2-yard run by Jones. Southeastern then fumbled the kickoff and Cass Tech took a 13-8 lead after Gordon's 7-yard TD run. Then Sturgis became a one-man wrecking crew for Southeastern in the first half, with three catches for 74 yards along with his score. He also had 74 yards returning on two kickoffs and 41 yards rushing from when he lined up under center. "We had two guys go to Michigan State and Sturgis is better than both of them," English said, adding that last year's team had more talent, but this team jelled better.
