All-Area Posts: 563 08/20/08 4:20 PM	Tags : None I work with a former Brother Rice student and we were discussing this hypothetical situation. If we took any KLAA team substituted them for Divine Child or U of D into the Catholic League Central Division ---- How many KLAA teams would be able to finish their schedule and clinch the playoffs at 6-3. We are assuming that the KLAA team plays Brother Rice, Catholic Central, St. Marys, Delasalle, and either Divine Child or U of D Jesuit. + whatever games the current KLAA teams play in their current non division games. + the KLAA team gets a cupcake (assumed) win for the KLAA crossover game that is unknown. For example Stevenson's schedule would now look something like this. Franklin Howell Brother Rice Delasalle St. Marys Catholic Central U of D Churchill Cupcake (sure win) Would Stevenson make the playoffs? How many KLAA teams do you think could do it? If you vote for any teams please list the ones that could make it through. How many KLAA teams could make the playoffs? (Result) 0 - NONE 1 2 3 More than 3

Wow, completely different conversation ---- but thanks for chiming in. I'll take that as a NO, since even with the change you only put the Livonia All-Star team at 6 or 7 wins. I guess I should have been smarter to change the situation from what our discussion was about to the Ottawa Kent Red --- as I should have known everything with the private school teams gets off topic. If you can't get past the CHSL thing. How about this, consider you dropping into the OK Red + 2 more games --- for Stevenson I'll say the other Livonia teams. and I'll be kicking out East Kentwood to bring in Stevenson Franklin Churchill Grand Haven Grandville Holland West Ottawa Hudsonville Jenison Muskegon Rockford Is that a playoff team for Stevenson?

All-Searn Hall of Fame Posts: 5322 08/20/08 5:45 PM Board Owner http://michiganhsfootball.com http://ndfanzone.com	It would be VERY DIFFICULT for most teams in the state to make the playoffs with those schedules. Good luck to teams like Brother Rice, St. Marys and Muskegon that have roads similar to those!!!!! I really hope they didn't go overboard with schedules and miss the playoffs somehow.... Consider if Stevenson actually did play in the CHSL, that "cupcake" game wouldn't be there ... Let's say Stevenson defeated Franklin, Howell, CC, U of D, Churchill and was sitting at 5-3, .... the week 9 game would be a rematch against either Rice, OLSM or DeLaSalle. So I'll say NO on that one. That make a "realistic" (if we can call it that) schedule with the OK-RED a little bit easier .... If Stevenson puts together a team as strong as 2007 ... I think they could finish 6-3 with that OK-RED schedule if everything went right ... but they couldn't afford to have any "off weeks". As for Spartan2008StateChamps response: Just a word of advice. If the Spartans want to live up to the forum handle you chose (meaning a State Championship) ... consider that you might have to go through 1 or 2 of those CHSL teams in the playoffs (since DLS could be in D1) ... and the areas they can draw from or whether you think they recruit wont matter once the teams hit the field. I expect this sort of question from a CHSL fan trying to prove something... not you. It's like comparing apples to oranges. At private schools, you're going to get a different class of player... and in addition those who are "recruited" (in quotes because recruitment comes in many flavors). It's funny reading around all of the different blogs and forums.... it seems to me that those fans who support the top schools in the CHSL do the most complaining about "issues" that are out of their control.

All-Area Posts: 566 08/20/08 9:15 PM	And whether these teams have a "different class of player" or "are recruited" --- These are MHSAA teams competing for the same crown that we are in the end. So I see no issue comparing. The Catholic League has 4 really good teams, and they are all in one division. If the KLAA took it's top 5 and sorted them into 1 Power Division every couple years -- it would have a pretty damn good status in this area of the state. Stevenson and Canton have both been in the D1 finals as of late, Novi, Milford, WLW, WLC, Franklin, etc. have made some strong playoff runs this decade. It might not be quite there with the CHSL or the OK Red, -- - but you could say it was right there with the next best leagues in the state. I saw the WLAA, while still a quality league, going down hill and the KVC rising the past 5+ years, and it's nice to see two strong leagues join forces. The joining should only help the former WLAA teams get back on track. There's no reason we can't even have a discussion comparing our teams to the state's top leagues.

Sophomore Posts: 54 08/20/08 10:39 PM	Putting a KLAA team into the CHSL Central wouldn't be as dooming as most would think. The underlying issue is in strength of schedule but all a team can do is win the games they're scheduled. That being said I think most KLAA teams would be in the 4-5 win range in that league and I really think a handful of them would have a shot at being playoff teams, such as Stevenson, Novi, Franklin, Churchill, Canton and Lakeland. And I'm not saying all of them would be, but this isn't the same CC as 10 years ago, and Novi and the Livonia schools have the athletes to compete with Brother Rice and St. Mary's. That being said, a CHSL Central team would have just as difficult of a time running the table in the KLAA as they would in the Central. Put them in the KLAA South instead of Wayne for arguments sake and they would have to play Glenn, Canton, Franklin, Plymouth, and Churchill in order to get a shot at either Novi or Stevenson. The difference between that schedule and the CHSL Central schedule is that there are no cupcakes in the KLAA South while with no disregard to the Catholic League, teams like U-D and the Child struggle to compete with the rest of the teams in their division. Completely unrelated, but good luck to all tomorrow in their four-ways.

All-Searn 2nd Team Posts: 1473 08/20/08 11:14 PM	This year, I think maybe zero, but perhaps one or two. The reason I say zero is that I consider Stevenson to be the best team in the entire KLAA, but on that schedule, I would have them losing to Rice, OLSM, and DLS for sure. Then they'd have to win one of CC, a solid Howell squad, and their two cross-town rivals. I don't think they'd have enough in the tank to win all four of those. If that's the case, then I'd have to say zero, sad to say. I actually think a team like Canton, who can take the physical pounding of a schedule like that, would have the best chance. Eventually, however, some schools would understand what it would take to compete and ramp it up. After all, we're talking about 24 schools in SE Michigan.

Senior Posts: 316 08/20/08 11:47 PM	My take is from the CHSL side, and I will be addressing multiple people in this post so I'll try not to confuse anyone. This is all speculation, and purely opinion. In a random individual game --- such as the CC/Milford playoff game a few years back and other CHSL vs. KLAA teams ---- KLAA teams have won, lost big and lost close games --- one game -- anything can happen. The thing I question is the grind of the season. Milford beat CC in a tough, hardnosed, emotional game in the playoffs --- How would Milford have faired if they had to play an even stronger OLSM team the next week, and and even stronger Brother Rice team the week after, and so on? I don't question whether a KLAA team could step up and play with and beat the CHSL teams in an individual game -- I only question the overall grind. U of D was awful in 2007, but under Merchant they always played tough -- and while they have not made the playoffs since 2001 --- I can say without question, under the average KLAA schedule --- they would have made the playoffs at least 3 times from 2002-2006. -- Divine Child I'm sure would have had a lot more success as well. -- I have nothing against the KLAA teams -- I'm just responding to the topic. I grew up in WLAA Country ---- I know the territory and would have loved nothing more to have seen CC vs. Stevenson in a regional final a year ago. It would have been very interesting. -- and hope to see the Shamrocks sneak into the 2008 playoffs and get matched up with some more KLAA teams (hopefully Novi and/or Stevenson) Heck, I'd love to see the Shamrocks and Wildcats (Novi) square off in a yearly opener for bragging rights in Novi.

When Milford beat CC, Milford was in an up year, and CC in a down year. I was not surprised by the outcome of that game.
