Prepseer,
Good call with Zinc. It will be the restaraunt of choice in a few days as I ring in my 50th B'day. Gotta say I love Roma Cafe (if those walls could talk), Millers is the real burger king as well and agree with you about Chi-town being restaraunt heaven. Perhaps our stomachs were related in a past life? But I think you are being a bit hard on Detroit. I think there are a ton of hidden gems in the area, especially when it comes to ethnic fare. It's hard to beat the Polish Kitchen in Hamtramck for artery bursting wonderfulness. Xojimilco is the closet thing to real Mexican food I've had since I spent a month south of the border when I was in my 20's, and a super unique and most suprisingly good experience can be found at the Blue Nile where one can check out Ethiopian food (who'da thunk?). |

7AM and NEVER too early to be thinking about this stuff.
Ho, Since we are of like minds, try the Polish Village Cafe on Yemans in Hamtramck. Also, if you like Xochi's, may I suggest Los Galenas? Those are my two favs in Hamtramck and Mexicantown respectively. btw. My previous picks above all share a common thread. |

Searn, you have to try Chipotle's. Very good food. As far as the best bar burger goes, for me it has to be Mason's on Farmington just south of
Schoolcraft in Livonia. Their "Double Shift" is outstanding. My wife is a really big fan of Max and Erma's and Red Robin's.

Detroit Restaurants | #26 | ||

Windward (and Biased),
I agree that Detroit has some good ethnic restaurants, particularly Mexican and Polish. I've never been to Polish Village, but used to go to the Polish Yacht Club when I worked downtown. I wouldn't really consider that a Polish restaurant, but it was a kitchy place with good fried perch. Best polish restaurant I've been to recently is a place up in Cross Village--can't remember the name though. I haven't been to Mexican town in a while, but now that you've reminded me how good it is, I think I go soon. I still have to rate Chicago above Detroit--by a huge margin. I'm talking ten times better. No, maybe 100 times better. And, it's not just the restaurants, but the city itself. I'm not a big fan of Detroit--the city not suburbs. and, the Kwame fiasco doesn't help. I used to be a big supporter and even lived downtown in my early 20's, but, notwithstanding some development downtown and the on-going PR from the pols and bus. leaders, the city is beyond repair IMO. I've felt this for some time, but it was solidified back in December when I went down to dinner at the MGM Grand. I got off the Lodge at the wrong exit and had to take surface streets from the Boulevard to the hotel. This was on a Friday night at around 6:00 pm and we were virtually the only car that was on the road for about a two mile stretch. We kept getting stopped by traffic lights, but there was no traffic. There were also virtually no occupied buildings. Many were boarded up, many were partially-demolished. And, of course, there were many vacant lots. I don't think the worst areas of Baghdad would be any worse. This was in the area between New Center and Downtown, in an area of the city that I thought was being renovated. I thought it was the neighborhoods that were decaying. Of course, there are pockets of development. The refurbished Ren Cen. The three casinos. Campus Martius. Ford Field/Comerica. The renovated Book Cadillac (is that really happening). But, that is just the tip of the iceberg. It probably represents 5% of the Central Business District, let alone the New Center and the neighborhoods. I drove around what used to be one of Detroit's best neighborhoods during the basketball season when I went to Calihan Hall and UD Jesuit. It is so depressing that in my wildest dreams I cannot imagine the city ever being brought back to its former glory. Then I go to Chicago and never see the suburbs, but spend all my time downtown and on the near north side--all within two or three miles of the Loop. The worst thing you encounter is traffic because there are so many people actually living there and going out to restaurants, clubs, stores, museums, etc. World Clsss hotels. Shops. Office Towers. Compare Michigan Ave. to Woodward Ave. One would be a 10 out of 10, the other 0 out of 10. I realize this is a H.S. Football forum and we started out talking about restaurants, but it got me going about a subject I feel passionately about and I felt like venting a bit. It is the off-season, right. |

I think somewhere someone mentioned pizza. When in the Detroit area I like to go to Pizzapapalis or Niki's in Greek town. Of the two I prefer Niki's
but was wondering where you native Eastside folks go for a good pie.

Do all you weigh 400 lbs? With the way some of you guys eat, it sure seems like it.
Also, I would not want to eat at a place that is named after something Madonna wore at a concert (Zinc Brassiere) circa 1989. Favorite food place: Tie between PF Chang's and Red Robin. I try not to eat fast food anymore, though if I need something quick, I would look for a Subway or a Quiznos (Mmmm...toasty). |

I certainly weigh more than when I was in senior high school. The family is eating more at home nowadays due to the gas prices increasing so much and
restaurant prices increasing as well. When the family eats out nowadays it is more like Red Lobster, Olive Garden, or Mountain Jacks to mention 3 other
places. I mentioned locations for previously mentioned restaurants in case people come out this way for a game.

Have to agree with prepseer that Saltwater at the MGM was phenominal. A world class meal, and the best I've had since visiting K Paul's Louisiana
Kitchen in New Orleans, which is owned by Chef Paul Prudhomme.
Fast food? Jackson is a haven for the unhealthy. The West Point Lounge makes Miller's in Dearborn look second class in the burger category. Schlenker's is a close second and the equal of Miller's, minus the brew. Jackson also boasts The Parlour for the world's greatest ice cream treats, and Hinkley's Donuts, which has NO equal in the state. And trust me, in the past I've eaten donuts from about every corner of Michigan. The only chain fast food I even consider anymore is Subway. I'm too lazy to check out any of the other sandwich shops. I consider all chains garbage..if you are on the Eastside Dakota. Chippewa Valley, Ike, Fraser area you must go to JBaldwins at 18 and Garfield, a little pricey but well worth it. |

I ate at Baja Fresh over the weekend ... and I forget how much better it is than a Taco Bell ... If you consider Baja Fresh "fast food" then ..
it's gotta bump down the 4th meal option.
I had to update my list on the first post to reflect some changes. As for Pizza. My few of my favorites(in no specific order) Pizza Hut (pan pizza only) Jets Primos (7 mile Livonia location) The worst I've had lately Chuck E Cheese Dominos The rest are mostly pretty good.

Best places I've found for Buffalo Style Wings (in no order) Hooters (3 mile island, extra crispy) Buffalo Wild Wings (spicy garlic flavor)* Chicken King (flaming wings) I think I actually prefer the boneless wings at BW3, the actually chicken wing (bone-in) quality at BW3 is not that great ... they taste like they've been cooked, frozen then re-heated with the sauce. What gets BW3 on the list is that the Spicy Garlic Sauce at BW3 is probably my favorite overall wing sauce.

Some of my favorite wings are found at Sweetwater Tavern in Detroit. Also a sentimental favorite as it is where my wife and I went on our first official date.

BiasedGuy wrote: Living up to your name, eh Biased Guy? I have eaten at plenty of restaurants in Milford. Duke's is solid, but there are many better alternatives, including 59 West and Baker's. For pre- or post-game activities, however, my top recommendations are the Comeback Inn or the MVP (which are pretty much across the street from the high school) and, if you're traveling back towards I-96, O'Callaghans Pub downtown. All five of the places I've mentioned have much better food and quite extensive lists of beers on tap. I think you can get Bell's Oberon during the season at all of these places, but they all also have the traditional American/Canadian lagers on tap, too.![]()

The sampler platter at 59 West is probably the largest 'pile of food' I have ever seen at a restaurant.
