Too bad that the CHSL couldn't agree to admit Flint Powers in only for football as it appeared that would be the way to go initially. After what happened to DCD, I think that it is going to be hard to get another school to become a member unless it's a new (for sports purposes) Catholic school.

I'm about to take off for the Clarkston basketball game so I'll edit this when I get back since I'm doing this from memory and didn't look up the SEN numbers.

Perhaps it has come time to split up the schools by geography:
CHSL West
Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard = 500

OLSM = 1062

CHSL East

DLS = 1680
Macomb Austin = 800 - 1,000
Madison Heights Bishop Foley = 427

CHSL Intersectional = 3.619
Madison Heights Bishop Foley = 427
Allen Park Cabrini = 359
Detroit Loyola = 316
Royal Oak Shrine = 307

Taylor Light and Life = 171
Detroit Urban Lutheran = 118

Madision Heights Bishop Foley goes to the CHSL Intersectional when Macomb Austin becomes an official league member. There would be two crossovers and the big 4 could play each other thus eliminating the other schools fears of having to play the big schools as well except for the division games.

I touched on this in a previous post as well. I personally question the powers that be at the catholic league Why not allow Powers to play just for football, and how can you drop U of D? I also think with the opening of Austin(hopefully that school grows as projected) Everest, and Corpus Christi the future looks rather bight for the catholic league. Personally the geography idea is bad especially in the east. Foley does not have the size or numbers (maybe 45 players in their entire program) and Gr would be playing way out of their league.To gain perspective I do not believe that the GR varsity could beat dls, or Rice JV in fact those games would proablly not even be within 30 points.. Those two schools wold get bombed by upwards of 40-50 points with the Central division program's calling off the dogs. None of the Intersectional teams (with exception of ND prep, and maybe AAGR) should be forced to play against the all boy central division teams. It is not fare to them and does not help the central division in regards to competitive balance. Another scheduling addition I believe would be to fill gaps in the schedule with members of the soon to be defunct Big 9. I would rather see my shamrocks play one or more of the following teams Flushing, Davison, and Powers.

I agree, bad move by the CHSL in the Powers and U of D deals ....

What sport does the CHSL really need Powers for other than football anyway?

The article is says for 2008 that Powers would not come in, but I think it's open after that. If Powers does come in after that point, then a division of Prep, UDJ, Powers, and DC is possible. Also, the new Austin was supposed to break ground this month, but it does not look like that will happen. Austin will probably not open until 2010 at the very least.

I, for one, favor the addition of any of these traditional private school 'powers' to wherever they would fit in the CL. As I mentioned once before, issue a one dollar per game ticket surcharge if a team has to travel more than some value 'X' miles. That would help defray the travel costs.

And while we are on the subject of CL school play, the CL really REALLY needs to rethink the archaic Prep Bowl. Have you seen how poorly attended these games are? CTND has been showing the 2006 contest between olsm and DCC for what seems to be the last 2 months. While olsm has never impressed me with their travel attendance, the CC side was almost as dismal. How much money must THAT cost, to host a game at Ford Field for fourteen fans? I respect that they use this venue to honor our CYO athletes but......

At least the AOD and CL could inject some renewed interest with the hope of new matchups. I would love to see other teams such as Powers Catholic, Nouvel, MCC, and JLC.

And UD just needs to suck it up and play. It's only 2 years ago that they thought they had something going, and now they want out? Puhlease! They've been pretty happy, over the years, with their swim, soccer, and lacrosse alignment. That's because they have been darn competitive in those sports.

Suck it up Cubs.

Until the CHSL is able to recruit some new members or new schools (Powers, Nouvel, Austin, etc)

U of D a class A school and is right where they belong withing the CHSL and I would not move them anywhere at this time. If U of D can't take it, see ya later! Have fun scheduling an Independent schedule for football, and oh ya, for every other sport as well.

Either that or we can send all the CHSL whiners to their own division, ... so far it's U of D and NDP, ... are there any other teams who want to join them in the CHSL-PINK division?

Well I think the Catholic league needs to readjust its philosphy. I hate to say it but when you close the number of schools as they did you have to start thinking maybe opening it up to more schools. I hate to say but maybe make it the Detroit Metro Christian League. I know it sounds awful but I think it be the best idea for them. If I am mistaken but isnt there a few large christian schools in the Metro Detroit area that could join this. Of course an easy solution would just combine the Catholic League with the Detroit Publics.

Interesting then on two fronts Boeing. Number 1, it is interesting that you posted a link to the formatted letter and not how it might have appeared in the 'Freep. Also it is interesting in that Vic Michaels did not tip his (or any) hand then. He addressed the McCabe article specifically for the 2008 season. That would lead me to guess that '09 is still possible.

Or as Searn put it, 'The Pink Division"

One thing for sure, the CHSL needs to do something with its alignment and Prep Bowl schedule so that these teams are not playing each other twice or even three times in a season.

Searn Don't be so quick to call UDJ whiners based on Freep article. Players never wanted to leave Central. And the year previous, with Merchant and some dynamic seniors and teamwork, UDJ had a good year in 2006, even though 4-5! 2007 was horrific, and player exodus is continuing. Many wonder if UDJ will be able to put together a team for 2008. 2007: New coach? Players? Certainly no teamwork.... I could cite some Brother Rice/UDJ stereotypes and their overlap of neighborhoods that they both recruit from, but I won't. UDJ has in the past had nothing to be ashamed of. Record of 0-9 was tough, but they will recover. May be a couple years though. :-(

If it's untrue then, my apologies ...

But, this is not the first time I've heard of UD possibly wanting out of the Central in the past few seasons from different people....

With the current crop of teams the only place that U of D belongs in the CHSL is the Central division with Rice,OLSM,CC,DLS

Hey guys, FYI....there has not even been a shovel put in the ground for Macomb Austin yet...I hear funding is an issue and I am just guessing but I would say 2011 or 2012 at the earliest for football

Sounds like semantics. While UDJ may not have requested to move out of the Central, it did ask for "relief" in scheduling football. In orther words, it didn't want to play Brother Rice, OLSM and DCC. But, they would stay in the Central, and as I understand, still be eligible for the Prep Bowl. That's even worse than moving out of the Central. Give me a break. Who's running the asylum at the Catholic League. Tell UDJ to tough it out and play a full Central Div. schedule or resign from the League. This is total BS. One year ago, UDJ almost beat BBR late in the season, when BBR was undefeated at the time. They went on to beat Allen Park in a crossover game that same season. And one year later, they want to give up just because they were 0-9 last year. Get over it. Get a new coach. Challenge OLSM when they poach. Start acting like the Jebby Prep Schools around the country. It's top-level Academics, Athlettics and Religion. Not Academics, Athletics (excl. football) and Religion. It appears that UDJ is going the way of its namesake. Look what's happened to UDM, while the other Jebby institutions thrive. Maybe it's the City of Detroit. Come on UDJ. Make your alumni proud and gut it out.
