Great post, Ho.

You captured exactly what I had thought to be the main issue: the safety of the kids. As pointed out by the Colonel in the Dr. Andrews interview, fatigue leads to injuries in many cases. Alas, in OT situations fatigue also leads to mistakes that end the game, but it did not happen in this case.

The MHSAA officials first alerted each teams AD of their concerns. From my understanding both AD's thought the concerns were legit and ADs and MHSAA officials then met with coaches between OT periods to get their take. Though I am sure some invovled felt it was unfortunate circumstances, no one thought it was a bad call....it was just the one they had to make.

Out of state, this has been playing well in news blurbs here and there with reports of "good job Michigan"...

I'll admit I have not read everything out there about this case ...

Did the MHSAA reps confer with the teams coaches to see if they felt the teams should continue to compete, or did they just make their decision on their own?

As a fan, I agree, it was unfortunate that the MHSAA had no such contingency for the circumstances.

It is important to note that the discussion by officials at the time was framed by the rules in place.

There was no rule that allowed for an abitrary solution such as a shootout or change in on ice manpower.

There was a rule that says that no games can take place after March 8th.

Oh well, what's done is done. No going back now. There's a lot of controversy in competitive cheer as well this year. Grandville upset the 11 time defending state champs Rochester and now half of the mlive board is saying the competition was rigged, the judges were paid off, Rochester did way better, they should go back and watch the video and rescore the competition, Grandville's championship was a gift, the competition should be moved away from West Michigan, the judges should...

Yep. Agree.

Still think there were a number a ways to have changed the outcome, while keeping the health of the players paramount: Suspend the completion of the game till the next day. Find agreement between the officials and two programs for an outcome - MHSAA would have to empower the refs to come up with a solution. But that is what it boils down to...the MHSAA.

They honestly could not envision a possible outcome like this? Again, what was the tiebreaker for the semis?...

Having said that, however, it was cool to read how the players from both teams were sincerely happy for one another. What an incredible sense of mutual respect and admiration there must have been after the game. This would not have happened had one team won after 1 OT + shootout.

I think they should do a two-frame roll-off...Oops, wrong sport....

I think a shootout after one OT would have worked in this instance. The MHSAA, unfortuantely, doesn't think ahead in some sports. This is example number one...

Interesting situation, I'm not sure how it should have been handled, but the MHSAA dropped the ball on this one for sure.

There has got to be a letdown for these kids who went all out for over 4 hours with no result and a cochampionship.

During my sports career I tied one game. It was the biggest football game of the year for 5th and 6th graders, what were supposed to be the two best teams --- and the winner was to take the division title. The game ended in a 0-0 tie...

The MHSAA should have a shootout out at the end of 2 OT''s for high school hockey. This would solve their problem LOL!! This would be equivalent to the OT in high school football.

I totally agree with stopping the game after 8 overtimes. It is not worth risking the lives and limbs of these young men just to reach a conclusive result.

The real shame goes to the MHSAA for not having a policy in place to handle this circumstance. It should be something like 3 OT's and then a shootout.

I totally disagreed with the decision until I read what I posted below...With that said, the MHSAA needs to implement a shoot out after a certain number of overtimes
